Q: Can someone tell me what the differences are between the 2nd and 1st generation games?

The major updates in 2nd edition are: -Updated rules, easier to learn than the previous version. -The distance icons on map trails have been removed. Each trail is worth a distance of 1. -Major Park cards added, these have special abilities that can help players advance in the game. Players also now start with wooden camp sites to mark the Major parks they visit. -All Park cards are now over-sized and have park facts printed on them -Stones now score 1 point each. There are also 'Second Most Stone color' bonus cards -Wooden bear first player marker

Q: Is this more of a kids game? Is it challenging enough for adults?

I wouldn't call it "challenging", but it is fun and interesting. You can use different strategies, or change strategies as you go. I agree with Sara -- it is great for adults and kids.

Q: The instructions say it's for up to 5 players, but is there a reason it wouldn't work for 6, with the addition of a backpack figure?

Worth buying and teaming up players 5&6 at the least. I went through the whole game to ensure mint ... I wish I could've kept it myself ... You'll surely be equally as impressed with it as me. Enjoy!!!
