Comfortable
Yay! Finally found a comfortable pair of sturdy walking shoes for my upcoming trips to Europe and Alaska. I have been struggling for 3 months...ordering and returning. Very frustrating. We will be walking in urban areas and hiking. It will be wet. These shoes are not waterproof but are water resistant. I plan to spray them with waterproofing before we go. They are comfortable right out of the box...as long as I add my orthotics ON TOP of the ones that come with the shoe or another thinner pair of padded inserts. Another trick is to cut part of the front of the original pad and then add your own to make sure you have enough toe room. Double layer of cushy! The shoes run wide so if you don't have a wide foot..I do not...it helps to take up some of the width and make a better fit. The shoes run short in my opinion. I have 3 pairs of Keen sandals (closed toe) in an 8 1/2 and they fit well. I needed a 9 1/2 in this shoe. I am so far very pleased with these shoes. They are a bit heavy, not as bad as some, but I do plan to wear them on the plane as they would not pack very well.

Walkers Alert -- This is a great shoe!!!
I absolutely love these shoes! I have all kinds heel issues and these shoes are snug and firm which gives the support I need. I am a heavy duty walker so this is very important to me. I highly recommend these shoes!

Everything a Hiking Shoe Should Be
Love this shoe! My feet are comfortable, great support and rugged for the rocky hills around here. Love it much better than the Targhee.

More like 4.5 stars, actually
First I'll write a blurb on my feet/body, as it may help to know just how crucial it is that I get a good fitting shoe. I usually wear a 9.5W or 10 women's. I have a surgically corrected bunion in one foot, an uncorrected bunion in the other. The arch in one foot is farther forward by a tiny bit than in the other. I have high arched feet. I have had ACL reconstruction surgery in one knee and need medical attention for the other. I have a 42deg thoracic spine curve, and a 38deg lumbar curve (scoliosis). I am nearly always in pain.So take what you will from that, and from this: I like this shoe. Compared to other hiking/walking shoes I've worn, these are the best so far. My bad knee is actually improving. I pulled my shoes out of the box new, and wore them for three days straight around London. We're talking at least 10 hours a day walking. I really like this shoe. I had minimal pain, and was very impressed. The toe box is perfect for my wide feet, too. Absolutely no breaking in.The half star off is for the insert. When I first walked in these shoes, I instantly noted the way they made my feet roll. With my high arch, my feet roll in a bit when stepping. The factory insert seems to have built in support but on my feet, it exacerbates the rolling problem. Now, this is of course an easy fix. I swapped out the factory inserts for some Columbia inserts I had squirreled away years ago. Bingo. I also tried the Sole brand (heat) moldable inserts. Both worked fine, I can choose between the two quite happily. But I feel like if I pay this much for a shoe, it ought to be wearable by more than just one type of arch. Also, the sole on the right shoe was not attached properly. It began peeling away and within one week it was clear I could not wear the shoe. I was very disappointed as I was nearing being in LOVE with the shoes. I contacted customer service, who were fantastic. I got a new pair of shoes sent out right away and simply returned the faulty shoes. Interestingly, the replacement pair fits a *tiny* bit differently, and the color is darker. Overall, still glad I stuck with the shoe.

Brand New and Comfortable for All Day Disneyland
These Keens are comfortable straight out of the box. There is no need to "break them in". Their low profile edge does not rub on your ankle bone. I ordered a size 10; for most shoes, I usually order size 10 or 10.5. This size 10 fits wonderfully; it is perfectly roomy for wider feet when wearing normal thickness socks (I'm sure thick wool socks would be just fine as well). The first time wearing these Keens out of the box, I wore them to travel across the country. These Keens supported my feet through constant airport walking and taking multiple flights. Day 2, I wore them all day long in Disneyland. Day 3, I wore them all day long in Disneyland. Day 4, I wore them to travel through multiple airports with a ton of walking. In conclusion, these Keens are awesome. Their level of comfort is unparalleled. Someone else that was on this trip had Merrells and by day 3, they were complaining that their feet hurt. I am now going to wear Keens everyday. Also, the shoelaces on these Keens are "bumpy" and styled in such a way that you don't have to double knot them to get them to stay tied. I tied the laces at the beginning of the trip and then proceeded to use them like slip on shoes.

Love these shoes! Unfortunately, they were a tad too big.
