It does have a hotplate which stays hot for about 20 minutes, after which it automatically switches itself off.

I can confirm that yes it is BPA free

It's meant to be used with "Melitta 100" paper filters. But you might be able to find a reusable filter of that size. Would make the coffee a bit more bitter though... I love that coffee machine - tastes like a proper 80's classic ;)
