Grief Day By Day: Simple Practices and Daily Guidance for Living with Loss Paperback – September 25, 2018

This is a wonderful book. I like how you can pick it up and read when you want. You can do a lot or you could do a little - you can skip around. I started writing in the book- writing little notes -because sometimes I would read something that I wanted to write a little bit about. It’s a workbook but in a way it’s like a little journal and I’ve really enjoyed this book and found it helpful - as I am grieving my mother passing.

This book is a must have for those that have lost a special loved one and are grieving. It has helped me navigate through the emotions that come from losing a loved one.

I'm in my 70s and my friends have started losing their husbands. I stumbled on this book 3 years ago at Barnes & Noble, and gave it to one of my friends, who is religious. She was very close to her husband and was almost paralyzed with grief. She has used this book for over a year and said it really helped her. It is set up With daily devotionals and thoughts to hang onto. She used it for the first year after her husband died, and said she found it really helpful. I've given it to several friends over the past 3 years, and the ones that are more religious have appreciated it more. Feedback from them: It is set up more for dealing with the loss of a husband than it is for loss of a child, parent, or someone else close to you.

Grief is not linear. This book is quasi-linear, but not in a bad way.It is broken down into 52 chapters/weeks, and each week has seven days. Each day consists of a quote related to life/death/grieving, with a bit of discussion underneath the quote. Each week/chapter ends with a "Becoming a Grief Whisperer" exercise, although those pages do not always have enough room to write down the things that the exercise suggests. (One star off for that.)You can read things as fast as you like. You can read them in order, or not - or you can look in the index, and choose a subject that has meaning to you on any given day, ranging from obvious emotions like Exhaustion, Tears, Hope, Gratitude, or Anger, to more abstract thoughts like Honoring Our Dead, Wearing A Mask, or Hooray For Me. Some days, I pick up the book and open it at random to see what the universe has to say to me on any given day.Not every book on grief is going to work for everyone. I found "Grief Day by Day" to be a good starting point to find ways to handle grief. Some days you simply need to know somebody else has had the same thoughts as you (quotes). Other days you need a little bit of grief coaching (the discussion under the quotes). Some days you need very pointed advice/thoughts (choose from the index). Just remember that grief is not linear, some days are much better and some are worse, and everybody's journey is different - take things one step at a time, one day at a time.

Good read

I first came to know the author via her Grief Speaks out website in 2014, which then led me to her Facebook page. it was about 8 months after the death of my husband. I was just beginning to enter the steepest and most dangerous part of a journey that would test me in every way. I wrote to Jan, as so very many have, to tell her my story and what it meant to me to have her guidance, compassion, empathy and courage in that tumultuous time, where I often thought I was going quite insane and thought that no one understood completely. She gives those in sorrow a safe place to fearlessly speak their truth, to feel, deal and heal together; far beyond the well meaning platitudes that are de rigueur. As if that weren't enough of a contribution to provide solace to untold thousands, Jan also gave me and to so many, the gift of her friendship and her example of one who is determined to live an authentic life to it's fullest ~ in a way that celebrates all that is still true, pure and joyous, even in the midst of unspeakable sorrow. I will be ever in glad debt to her and look forward to sharing this long awaited book with all those that may benefit from it's courageous honesty. One can never truly know what manner of healing they may be bringing to another with just a word, a phrase or a willingness to listen. As we receive that gift, we are then compelled to do our part in turn for another when the time is right. Jan has begun a revolution of sorts ~ one that will ultimately change how society permits and accepts the full expression of a much needed, sacred inner process; an important rite of passage which each of us must one day become acquainted with.

It.was very good just felt it dragged a little. Did have good advice and seemed helpful to me. Anyone going through the steps it will be good.
