these blades will work with 701-1 straight cutter.

Q: How useful is this (with a cutter) to cut single sheets of large paper, such as watercolour paper?

This item worked great for me for cutting mat board, and I am a novice. It should work for cutting any kind of paper as long as the blade is fresh.

Q: Does anyone suggest using a self-healing cutting mat instead of a slip sheet?

Absolutely! I use an old rotery cutting mat to protect my table top it also helps the ruler from slipping, I also like to use blue painters tape to secure the ruler against any slipage. This is a must if you are using this ruler to cut mat board with a bevel cutter. Hope this helps.
