Made the switch from Preference base mix to this new version, Kindly, and like it even better
I've been using Honest Kitchen products for years and have developed a trust in the quality. The company's Preference base mix has been an important addition to our two dogs' daily meals for all of those years. While I occasionally use one of their dehydrated full meal mixes because they're convenient and all-inclusive (meat and veggies together), most of the time I prefer to make my own raw mixes using various protein sources and a healthy base mix.A few months ago, I noticed this new grain-free base, Kindly, that had been introduced by Honest Kitchen. I've been pleased for many years with the Preference version, but I decided to give this new base variety a try. This Kindly version is the same high quality as the Preference, but I like it much better for several reasons:1.) It hydrates MUCH better than the Preference2.) It's more uniformly ground into small pieces--unlike the chunks of dried banana and veggies occasionally found in Preference3.) Due to the flaxseed meal, it has slightly higher protein in the base (13.5% vs 12%) as well as a higher fat contentBoth Kindly and Preference are easy to use. I add my own raw chicken, turkey, salmon, beef, bison, eggs, cottage cheese, etc. It also works well as a base for cooked meats (which is what I did prior to switching to raw diet). I find it a bit more economical to just add my own protein source since I go through quite a bit (two dogs, and one is huge) and I can look for special sales on various meats. When I feed them human-grade meat/fish, I don't have to wonder where the meat comes from, whether it's fresh, or what else might possibly be in it.Other things that I like about it? It's made in a human-food facility and is supposedly taste-tested by humans. It's made fully in the US with no ingredients from China. There are no genetically modified ingredients and also no corn, wheat, soy, or rice. There's no added sugar, salt, or chemical preservatives. It doesn't take long to rehydrate (just 3-4 minutes) but I often rehydrate enough for a couple days worth of meals and just keep it in the fridge. I just scoop the appropriate amount into each dog's bowl and then mix in salmon oil and any supplements for each pooch. I then stir in the meat (I use 1 cup of base mix to 2 cups meat and other proteins). Both of the Honest Kitchen grain-free base mixes are an easy way for me to meet or exceed their dietary needs with no concerns of unhealthy additives.Ingredients (all dehydrated): Carrots, organic flaxseed, parsnips, peas, celery, organic coconut, pumpkin, chard, organic kelp, marjoram, garlic, tricalcium phosphate, choline chloride, zinc amino acid chelate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, potassium iodide, potassium chloride, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, thiamine mononitrate.

This food is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! THANK YOU HONEST KITCHEN FOR THE AMAZING PRODUCT!!
Why I switched: My dogs are both youngish, 4-5 years old, boxer mixes between 70 and 80 lbs. They both seemed healthy and fine eating the normal kibble, I used to rotate between Taste of the Wild varieties, so a good brand, but kibble none the less. They ate it, without any issues. Every time I went to the vet she cautioned me to keep their weight down, so we would limit their food and they would be miserable. Then I started seeing these commercials on how they make dog food in high pressure cookers and it turns it into those brown pellets, thinking that can't leave many nutrients left. And I always see and hear about dogs getting cancer, having skin issues, being overweight, etc. etc. etc. I started looking at alternatives, but something relatively easy to make. My previous two dogs, one died from cancer, and another had two TPLO surgeries (basically town knee ligaments), and eventually died suddenly from something neurological at 8 years old. My goal is to give my current dogs the best, healthiest life for as long as possible. Results: It has been about 6 months on this diet. After about 3-4 months I noticed their skin is softer, they both have even more energy than before (they always ran and jumped, but now they run and jump even higher.) Overall they seem happier, sleep better, poop more regularly. And the best part was when we weighed them this week, both have lost between 5 & 10 pounds and look strong and athletic. I couldn't believe they lost so much weight without us limiting their food at all! I can't wait to take them back to the vet in another 6 months. Side note, I currently don't give them any other supplements or vitamins. How we make it: for 2 large dogs (now between 60 and 70lbs), we go through about 1-2 boxes a month, I rotate the two base mix recipes. We do supplement their diet a little bit with treats, human food (I know, I know, but hey, they still lost weight and look and act really healthy). We usually get organic chicken breasts (when they are BOGO I stock up), or Ground Bison from Costco. Sometimes if I have extra fish I will mix in that. With the chicken, we use an Insta-Pot and that has been a god-send. We also have a large Kitchen-Aid mixer we use to mix everything together. We don't measure anymore, maybe 4 chicken breasts with 4-6 cups of dried food maybe? Add water and mix. Then we store it in mason jars in the fridge. We make batches 2-3 times a week, feed them 2x a day. Now that they lost so much weight, I will probably rotate in a organic or grass fed ground beef, or maybe add a small amount of healthy fat. I give the scent 5 stars (not for me, but definitely dog approved).Overall, switching to this has been the best thing I have done for my dogs. It has not been to hard on the pocketbook, I was already spending $100 a month on kibble, I probably spend $150 a month now. But the money I hope to save in the future with healthy dogs, less skin problems, vet visits, etc. will make this well worth.THANK YOU HONEST KITCHEN FOR MAKING THIS AMAZING PRODUCT!!!!!!!

they would become bored with their flavour of dry kibble and walk away ...
I've been feeding my two four year old cats (one male and one female) Prowl from The Honest Kitchen for almost 3 years now. Before this, they were fed high quality dry kibble. Every month or so, they would become bored with their flavour of dry kibble and walk away from their bowls. I continued to buy different varieties until I literally ran out of high quality dry food options. I then bought the trial size of the Prowl food and both cats went crazy while I was mixing it up for them, they have never been so vocal! Almost 3 years later and they are still incredibly vocal and excited to eat their Prowl meal and never walk away from their bowls before licking them clean.

Great product - but what's with the pricing?
This is a great product. Very simple, just need to add meat and water. The product is always consistent unlike some similar products where it looks different every time. One thing that isn't consistent however is the price. I bought a 7-lb bag for about $69 and then when that one was finished I went to buy another but the price was $535! The product is good, but not $535 good. It's too bad as I'd like to continue purchasing the same product over and over.

... first time using one of THK's base mixes and like all the other THK varieties we've tried
It's our first time using one of THK's base mixes and like all the other THK varieties we've tried, the dogs love it. It's nice to be able to vary meal time by adding a different protein. Will buy this again.

Mon chien adore !
J'utilise ce produit depuis maintenant 2 ans. C'est cher, mais d'excellente qualité. Je mélange la poudre à ses croquettes avec de l'eau très chaude. Mon chien vide tout son bol, il adore ça!
