The Complete Guide to Personal Finance: For Teenagers

A pretty good book to start with
I purchased this book for my 17-yr old daughter who is a junior in high school. This year she has been making complaints that the school doesn't teach them important life aspects such as check writing, checkbook balancing, compound interest, and amortization schedules, etc. The high school does teach these through a class called Accounting but she won't take this class. So I purchased this book for her. I'd also like to add here that I've tried to sit down with her and teach her these as well but she doesn't seem to like seeing how much she doesn't have after she's spent so much and would prefer to be like an ostrich with her head in the sand. I had hoped that her reading the book and 'hearing' it from someone other than her mother would get her to understand that saving instead of spending is so important.I read the book first to make sure that it's information was what I wanted her to learn. It's language is upbeat and not boring. It doesn't talk down to the reader like some financial books seem to do. It's kind of fun and puts some young humor in the reading to keep the reader interested. It also has excerpts from true teenagers and young adults that have been down the financial road and tell their own story. It doesn't teach check writing but does teach check balancing. It doesn't teach amortization schedules (as you would like to see if you bought your first car), but does teach compound interest (banking). All in all, two out of four. I would have liked the book to really push the students to stay away from credit/debt as much as possible. I understand student loans may be impossible to avoid, but car loans, gas cards, credit cards and the like are possible to stay away from if you do some creative thinking and hold tight to your guns that you will not use credit.Unfortunately, I do not see my daughter as one of those individuals being debt-free going into college as she loves too many material things and can't save her paycheck until the next payday. When I gave her this book, I found it on the floor two days later under some clothes. So much for the hope that this book might inspire her to start saving her money. But if you have a student or child mildly interested in saving or what banks do with your money (or which area of the bank you might save your money in to make it grow more) this book is a good read for that individual.

Wonderful present for a teenage niece
We recently gave our niece a generous check for her 16th birthday. Rather than take it to the mall with friends to spend she banked it - to our amazement. We wanted to encourage her fiscal wisdom with this book. It seemed that she actually might read and apply some of its tips. This book arrived new - as ordered - and promptly. We are glad it was available at such a reasonable price ;-)

Teens
I have two teens and I want them prepared for the real world. I have heard this book is good and I am looking forward to helping my teens get ready for life and finance. I wish I had know more at that age and maybe I would be further along in life. Here is my chance to do just that for them. This book is used at our local community college for teen summer classes.

Worth reading for anyone thinking of finances for the first time.
I bought this book for my grandsons. Only one has read it so far! He actually said it helped him a lot. It is good for adults too, though its written for teenagers.

Very Helpful Book
Personal finance may be one of the most important topics for kids to learn. It will affect so many aspects of their life... throughout their entire life. This book does a great job of teaching in a voice that related to teens. To be honest, most adults would be wise to read this book.Bottom Line: If you're a parent looking to educate your children on personal finance, this book does the trick.
