Clover 85397 Felting Needle Mat -Small-4-1/2 X3-3/4 X1-3/4

If you're interested in needle felting, I would wholeheartedly suggest buying the Clover Felting Needle Mat. It's an excellent piece to add to your needle felting tool set. I would only recommend it for "flat" projects though and not for 3D items like animal sculptures. It is not designed with those pieces in mind.It is rather small, measuring only 2 3/4-inch by 3 1/2-inch, so bear that in mind if you have a specific project you would like to work on. However, it is just right for tiny pieces. I personally use it to create flat Christmas ornaments along with cookie cutters.The bristles allow you to felt the item in a way so that both sides are rather flat. When using felting foam, the wool often continues into the foam, creating uneven surfaces. The mat, however, will give you an even shape throughout. Do be careful when poking your piece not to poke to far as it is rather easy to felt through to the base, endangering your needle. It is best to take it slow.If you're starting out needle felting, I would recommend this mat to begin with. It is an excellent tool that you're sure to use again for everything from doll clothes to embellishments.

it's a tad bulky and not super great for storage, but it works really well and I would recommend it over one of those foam things,

decent size, you can move it around if your felting design is bigger than this, and it's small enough to slip inside small projects, too. fairly easy to clean excess roving out of, as well.

I'm not sure why something resembling a hair brush is so expensive. My guess - this is one of the only felting mats I could find online. Overall, a good product but I would have gotten a bigger one if they were cheaper. I probably should have just bought a hair brush.

Clover makes some wonderful textile tools... this is just another in a long line of excellent textile tools from Clover.

I was afraid that if I bought the small one I would be forever moving it around to accommodate the felting area. That's true, but had I the larger one, I would not have been able to fit it into the felted purse I wanted to needle felt with a design. So I was glad that it was the size it was!
