Will putting a 9v Pedal in the 12v or 18v slot kill the pedal? Shame to have 2 slots unused?

Supplying 12V to 9V pedal is likely to be just fine. ...18V is iffy, tho. Proceed with caution. To do this safely, open the pedal, find the power input regulator. Check its datasheet to verify the absolute maximum input voltage (35V). Check any power input caps (prolly 16V or 35V). ***how-to below*** For many (most? all? ) 9V pedals, 12V power supply is just fine. Most analog and digital musicians' audio signals are 0-5V. (0s and 1s arent real...?!!) PS volts are tamed by regulators and caps which can handle 16 or 35V inputs (rev polarity is blocked by a diode... usually.) Often a 12V device may work ok on 9V, but you may get reduced headroom/distortion due to 0 to 7V or -5 to 5V. A built in 12V battery will not charge with 9V. Be very cautious supplying 9 or 12 ped 18V PS. It may work at first, but u will quickly fry a 16V cap, poof. (Which can be funny, and is easy to fix... if a pedal dies, check DC in caps first) Generally you can safely plug an 18v pedal with 9 or 12 V but there is a good chance that it will work poorly... (although it might give an interesting distortion effect). If an 18V ped has digital save data, better not chance it. You may corrupt your sweet patch or loop. ***checking your voltage regulator*** Inside yer ped, the voltage regulator will be a thin black plastic box (maybe 2×2×0.2 cm) with 3 to 4 electrical connectors at the bottom. There will be a metal heatsink protruding from the back-top. The heatsink may be connected to a larger heat spreader with a screw. Some text identifier will be on the front (LM805, for example). Maybe your ped has an MC7805 made by ON Semicondoctor. Maybe marked like: MC7805B RM232 (ON) If so, search for "ON mc7805 datasheet". If in doubt, search all the text on yours + "...datasheet" For such a common part, expect many search results from many companies. Try to find the datasheet from the correct company (Motorola, fairchild, TI, Analog Devices, or perhaps a chinese company). One datasheet will likely cover a family of products. On Semi's mc78xx datasheet covers many components... We are undaunted! Datasheets are actually quite friendly... (app notes are even better! ...so that's how they do it!) These companies know what we want! On the first page, the first line of the first table reveals the absolute max voltage ratings we seek! With ecstasy, we learn that a 5V regulator in the mc78xx family can accept a nominal voltage of 35V!! That looks good, but take care to consider the schematic on the right side of the page. ON recomends low pass filter capacitors over the input and ouput terminals (to ground). Cout is no concern. It is being regulated to 5V. *Cin*, if it exists, may be liable to pop, tho. Cin will be easy to find. It will likely be an elecrolytic (trash can) polar cap with 2 legs. The negative leg is shown by a (-) and a vertical stripe along the cap. This is the leg connected to ground. You will notice the ground plane easily. It will be much larger than the other electrical connections on the board. Cin, is given as .33uf, so if you find a .33uf cap connected over the power input, just check to see the voltage. If it is 35V, you are innnn luck! You may safely connect your pedal to even an 18V spot! Most likely, it will Cin will be 16V, which is a common value. (Fine for a 12V power supply!!... ) i think 16v caps are common due to the ubiquity of car electric and now cheap solar (which is 11-14V...) So you can play with your pedals in your car...! (Not while driving..?) If you *cant* find a Cin trashcan cap, look for a surface mount tantalum cap (a little yellow square). These are increasingly common esp. in chinese circuit designs (like those cute Donner pedals!)

Try the other 500ma jack, if that doesn't work, try a different power cord, if that doesn't work, put a different pedal in one of the 500ma jacks and see if it works. If nothing works on either 500ma jack, the problem is with the power supply. If the other pedal works, the problem is in your Big Sky. The Big Sky may work on battery power, but not through the direct power input. The big sky uses a negative center style power cable, which is common and uses 300ma You just have to narrow it down a piece at a time.
