John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale star as Jonathan and Sara, two young people who meet by chance one Christmas in New York and spend a memorable evening wandering around the city together. When they part at the end of the night, they decide to let fate take charge of their future and make no plans to meet again. Years later, Jonathan is still living in New York, Sara has moved to San Francisco, and both are on the verge of getting married to other people. Before their big days arrive, they simultaneously decide to give fate one last chance and head off in search of each other. But as Kate begins a weekend in New York, Jonathan embarks for San Franciso...

Serendipity
I dont usually watch romantic films, rom-com or otherwise.....so when a friend put this my way it sat in my DVD pile and remained unwatched.....until this evening. John Cusack plays the kind of guy you end up wishing you knew, sweet, kind of bashful when he meets Sara ( Kate Beckinsale) who kept reminding me of me when I was younger ( she says at the ancient age of 29) who he starts talking to over a pair of gloves, which grows into coffee...but he never learns her last name and they are seperated having left each other only two 'clues' released into the wild....if these come together then it's fated. Several years later they're both engaged to other people and as their wedding days grow closer, so does the feeling that they are with the wrong people....cold feet or the realisation they are soulmates apart? Cusack is rapidly getting my vote as a Hollywood leading actor who CAN actually act, has more than one facial expression and isn't just in the film as 'eye candy'. Beckinsale also manages to make Sara believeable, and puts forward her character in a way that makes you relate to her and understand why seeking John is such an issue. The Greeks didn't write obituries, they only asked if the person had passion. There are many 'messages' you could take from this film or just enjoy it as a romantic movie....but do see it, even if it's only one cold winter evening with a cup of something warm when you have sole possession of the remote control....it will rapidly find it's way to the top of your 'feel good' plile too!

Fate or merely contrived circumstance?
Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) meet while shopping in New York, after engaging in general pleasantries, they proceed to spend the rest of the day together and have a wonderful time. Sara is a big believer in serendipity, and coupled with the fact that both Jon and herself already have partners, she sends Jon mad by insisting that if they are meant to be together then the hands of fate will make it work. She signs her name and phone number in the front of a book and he signs his details on a dollar bill, if it's meant to be then these items will find their way back into each others lives again...Perhaps Serendipity just finds me in a forgiving mood each time I watch it? Perhaps I'm a hopeless romantic guy at heart and it works on an emotional level? Maybe I just love me a Christmas movie? But whatever it is? I just know that I really enjoy the picture. From its fabulous use of the New York locations to the amiable bankability of its two main stars, I know I'm being led to an inevitable warmth that delivers the broadest of grins on to my face. That's it really, it's not much of a review for you, but if you want to have the cockles of your heart warmed by a film that clearly delivers what it sets out to do, then Serendipity is just the ticket.Fire on, bottle of wine and the company of Kate and John. Lovely. 7/10

Everything you want from a cosy romcom
I just love this film and watch it every Autumn. The chemistry between Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack is unmistakable, yet it is easy to feel frustrated at the pressures she puts on fate. The supporting characters are well-cast (coincidentally featuring the same wronged partners of Carrie & Big in SATC). We are not encouraged to dislike their respective fiances which makes their quest all the more confusing. Strikes a good balance of the predictable format of a romcam, with some unpredictable outcomes. A timeless classic in my opinion!
