"Tunable" is subjective. Yes it is tunable, but some of the over-blow register gets hairy depending on how far it is pulled out. It's musical science and ratios that you're messing with. Over-all, I found more volume with these puppies than my nickel ones, but a little smoother action on the nickel ones transitioning between registers. It was worth a try, and I am glad I did! I would be interested to see what a real wood one would sound like.

These are truly lovely flutes and well worth the money. They look pretty much like wood without the trouble you can get if you insist on playing real woood recorders and their ilk.Recorders, Irish Whistles, and the six hole flutes of which the Irish Whistle is a member of are all collectively referred to as block flutes or sometimes as fipple flutes. Six hole flutes are variants of flutes called flagelots.The difference between those and a recorder are that recorders have an additional, octaving hole on the bottm and the lowest two notes are sometimes double holed to make recorders fully chromatic. To play upper regiswter notes on a recorder you half close the octaving hole.To make the higher notes on a tin whistle or this flute you blow harder and the sound goes up. They can't be played as softly as a recorder and are not, generally, considered as high class an instrument. The fingering is also different. To compound things with a recorder, there are two types and two types of fingering, English and German. The German recorder is simpler, in theory, to play as was, I believe, either created or adopted by the Nazis as a "fold instrument" of sorts. They goth sound about the same to the untrained ear.Recorders come in many sizes as do flageolets or tin whistle. The lowest or key note in recorders faries between C and F as the sizes go up.I have most of the recorders except for the one which has the tube mouthpiece. My favorite, and the one closer to a tin whistle in sound and the ability to get loud low notes, is the Sopranino Recorder, sold, of course, here on Amazon.There are undoubtedly many online videos, CDs, DVDs and books on both recorders and tin whistles. The number one hint is: DON'T STICK THE THING INTO YOUR MOUTH LIKE AN ACME OR A STORM WHISTLE (which are also available on Amazon by the way and really get my dogs' attention--not to mention the neighbors.Use of the mouth and tongue is as important as the fingering part.Once again. These are lovely, look like wood, sound fine, and come with a nice enough bag made of vinyl. Just keep tooting and eventually you'll get it.

Very good product for the price. Clear lyrical sound, especially lower register. You cannot play these shyly; they need breath to perform, as in less forgiving than my older, standard Clarks. A bit to get used to in the upper register - takes some doing to not squeak (and I'm not there yet) but I believe it's doable. They are pretty whistles. I'm enjoying them.

I Love these! I enjoy the softer tone of these plastic Irish whistles. I needed both the C & D and this set is awesome! I am a beginner so I didn’t want to spend a small fortune either. Perfect set to start with. I also use a metal version from Clark and it’s good too. So as a comparison I suppose it’s personal preference. With the Woodnote set I like that I don’t have to stop and keep having to warm up the whistle to avoid the annoying and piercing squeaking noises while playing songs. Since I received them I’ve been practicing a lot with this set. They have become my first choice for my new goal of one day playing music in church.

1st time exposed to this flutes - I notice that if I blow it a little on the side of my mouth, on both flutes, I can get a better control of the pitch when I play it.

BEAUTIFUL tone and will really trick anyone into thinking its the really deal. Great instrument and provides great instructions on fingerings .

I was curious about a 'tin' whistle made from ABS plastic, but after reading reviews, I thought I'd give it a try. Delivery was prompt, and well packaged. I am a beginner and like another reviewer noted, it is a little tricky to get the right sound at first. But once I adjusted my technique, I was very pleased with the deep rich sound these whistles produced. If you are a beginner, I'd advise starting with a metal whistle first (I also have an Oak, a Waltons, and a Freeman MellowDog) I am very happy with the this purchase.
