Funny Story: Strange moss-covered Rock...KPOM!
This book includes one of my favorite Anansi tales, and I love how the clever spider is portrayed by the illustrator--as a "real-looking" spider rather than some sort of spider / human hybrid that seems to grace the pages of many children's books. This more "spidery" persona of Anansi makes him appear all the more crafty, sneaky, and greedy--much to the delight of readers. It's brilliant how the animals maintain a taste of realism while also sporting some recognizable human qualities too--like sitting in porch chairs and rocking chairs! This is a refreshing approach, and the illustrations are so fun! A joy to look at! You just have to laugh at a fainting hippo and a dejected lion. The story is well told too. We all wait for Anansi to be outwitted by Little Bush Deer after his reign of trickery and food collecting!Readers who enjoy this book may also enjoy "Anansi and the Magic Stick," which is created by the same author / illustrator pair: Eric A. Kimmel and Janet Stevens. For readers who like an Anansi that is a spider that has a human face, check out Verna Aardema's "Anansi Does the Impossible."This book makes a great addition to the family and / or school library.

A crowd pleaser
This title in the Anansi series is one of my favorites to share with children from Kindergarten to Grade 3. Anansi the spider is a trickster who gets caught in his own trap in the end. Kids can appreciate the sly bits of humor and the way that Anansi tries to fool the other animals. The appealing, brightly colored illustrations are large enough to share with a group and also work well in one-on-one reading sessions. "Anansi and the Magic Stick" is another title I like to share. While there are many Anansi stories based on the old folktales from the African tradition, I like the Eric Kimmel illustrations the best.

Was my son's favorite book, so I'm passing it on....
My son loved this book when he was a preschooler, and now that he's an adult, I purchased one to gift to one of his friends' daughters. The story is easy to follow, and when you add different animal voices as the reader, it brings the tale of tricky Anansi alive.

Excellent book
I read it to my grandkids with funny voices. Even the 3 year old will sit through the entire thing. When I last worked with kids, even the middle schoolers (Jr high) liked it.

Excellent Book - Enjoyed by 2 generations
I've had, now, three copies of this book. We wore out the first two paper back's and I've finally gotten one in hardback, to read to/with my 5 grandchildren. At one point I looked for more Anansi books and found nothing like this one, sadly. Anansi is a manipulative spider who figures out how to use a bit of magic he discovers to his advantage against an entire village of animals. In the end, a little unassuming bush deer outsmarts him and reverses his manipulation, making things right again. We all have people in our lives like Anansi. The lesson in this book will come in handy one day, and the kids love the patterning and sound effect in the story. This is one of my favorites, which my children loved and now my grandchildren love as well.

My students loved this story!
I had this book years ago and my 1st grade students read it so much that some of the pages were missing and I'd have to make up what happened on the missing pages. I finally bought a replacement and I'm so glad I did. It's an adorable book that my students always want read over and over to them.

Children ask ; Again, again !
One of my favourite books. I was a teacher for 32 years and have read this book hundreds of times, at the children’s request. They love the repartition in the story, and enjoy joining in. They love the animal characters and have empathy for them. Found it a good teaching aid, with excellent visual illustrations, for teaching the names of wild animals, names of fruit etc. Discussed different environments and we also talked about whether it is a good / bad thing, taking other animals/ peoples belongings. Have bought many, many copies of this book , the last 4 copies went to a village school In rural Tanzania. The children love it and asked me to paint the story on the dining room walls at the boarding school. Hopefully in the future we will start a children’s library in the village, and there will be many copies of this book.

Anansi again great story.
Can't get enough of stories of this spider man. Great for getting children's interest and also for getting the meanings of life across through story telling.

Not great
Abit if a strange story .. very repetitive, and nothing to do with moss except the word ...
