anyone have an opinion on best ear protection for firing a shotgun?

I have the Howard Leight R-03318 L3 muffs. My wife has the L2's. I shoot skeet and trap with my L3's using a 12 ga. I also shoot many other guns using them. They are comfortable, and block the sound, and shock waves excellent. I swear by them. They have a NRR (noise reduction rating) of 30 which is very high. On occasion if I have had sinus trouble, I will use collapsible foam ear inserts plus the Howard Leight L3's. You cant hear people talking then. I really dont think you'll be disappointed with the L3's.

Are they big enough to fit an extra large head well?

An extra large head is vague, I mean how large is xtra large. My hat size is 7 5/8. When I wear these, they are almost down on the lowest setting. So I would think they would fit you.

Would these be comfortable for someone with a bigger sized head?

My work bought these for everyone. I wear a size 7 1/4 hat, yet the bottom of the cup squeezes in against te bottom of my ears and that is fully extended. Bigger head? Don't buy them.

Which Howard Leight earmuff is best for outdoor shooting that does not need batteries or have to use ear plugs with them?

Cynthia, the Howard Leight R-03318 are great, not needing batteries and not needing ear plugs. I prefer this one over my more expensive one that needs batteries.
