A must read book for parents

My mother read PET when I was a child so I was raised pretty much following its principles. I am thoroughly convinced it conveys the right approach for dealing with your children. I read it myself in my twenties and now I've just bought and reread it now that I'm in my forties and dealing with two teenage boys and a pre-teen girl of my own. I think it's still completely relevant and I realize I've been applying it more or less instinctively throughout the years. Still, being reminded of all the basic principles is very worthwhile. I even use active listening in my work as a nursery teacher with children as young as 3. And it works! It's really an important book for anyone involved in education.

I first came across this book through a course I took at the age of 26. I am now 64, and the Director of a private school called Banbury Crossroads in Calgary, Alberta. I have found this book, and the course associated with it, to be the absolutely BEST communication course ever! Dr. Thomas Gordon was nominated for 2 Nobel Peace Prizes and I wish he had won. If everyone anywhere used this method of communication, we would have an utterly different culture--more effective, more pleasant, and more able to solve problems without distress. It is such an important book, because it outlines how to actively listen to others who have problems, to express your own problems without turning people off, to solve problems collaboratively and in a win-win fashion, and to deal with values in a respectful way. This book is all about mutual respect, and that is what a democracy is all about. Our school is a self-directed learning school, and I expect ALL teachers who work here to attend the course at least once, preferably with refresher courses after a number of years, and to read the book. It changes how they relate to people. I heartily wish EVERYONE read this book!!!
