Yearly maintenance. Last set of valves started leaking.

In converting a DT Swiss wheel set to tubeless I was using DT Swiss stems.I nearly got stranded on longer gravel rides a couple of times with a leak at the valve stem. This is the kiss of death for a tubeless setup. I nursed her home each time and went back to the drawing board. I finally realized that it was the stem and not the tape job, sealant, etc. I ordered these Stans stems and no more issues in ~300 or so miles so far.

I bought them all so you don’t have to. The Stan’s Aluminum valves are the lightest of them all. I liked that they come in a short 35mm size which I think is ideal for most mtb rims.The inner diameter is a bit narrow and is not compatible with KOM type sealant injector (with a long tube).I also wished more valves manufacturers would put groves at the bottom to avoid sealing shut against tire inserts (peatys and cushcore make valves with groves). The Stan’s valve won’t work well with tire inserts.

I installed these on Sun Ringle fat tire rims. So far these are sealing well. No issues with installation and the removable valve seal allows for sealant injection. There are lots of fancier looking stems out there, these are utilitarian black.

This just works. I was worried that the omission of a rubber o-ring would be an issue, but it was not. The seal holds well and the valve was easy to work with. The fit and finish are quite nice. Very happy with the quality. It would be nice to have something between the aluminum lock nut and my carbon rim, but maybe that’s not a real issue?

These 35mm stems are shorter and lighter.
