I ordered this charger because it has a "repair" mode for batteries that have sat for a while in a discharged state. I have a deep cycle marine battery that was flat and hoped the repair mode would work. Regrettably, it did not. No way to tell if the repair mode is a gimmick or if the battery was just too far gone. The charger has several other modes and, while it's a bit fiddly to use, consulting the instructions is key. Best to keep them handy.

This battery charger is different from the two I already have but don’t work as well as I want them to. For starters, neither one has an on off switch. This one not only has an on/off switch in front by the digital display, but one in the rear to shut the whole unit down completely. In the past, I have had to unplug either one of the chargers to reset it for an updated battery status check. Not so with this one. I can have it plugged into the extension cord, have the power switch turned off, hook the red cable to the positive battery post, then hook the black cable to the block ground post without fear of a spark or damage to the battery being charged or repaired. Once everything was connected, I just flipped the switch on and the digital display lit up. Since I was primarily interested in testing the device on an old dead battery in my pickup truck, I first read the instructions in the owners manual concerning the procedure for repairing it and held the Repair Mode button down for 5 seconds as prescribed. When I released it, the digital display immediately showed the repair mode functioning cycle and that it had been activated. As for the actual charge cycle, the step up from a 2.5 amp charging cycle, to faster cycles is part of the info produced on the display. Other readings include charge status, charge, voltage, battery type, etc. Also, the backlit display is easy to read in low light conditions, a feature my other chargers do not have. The automatic protective shutoff feature, as well as the cooling fan, are added bonuses, especially in hot weather when you have to keep the hood partially closed to keep the rain out. Will have to provide a follow up review after I test the Repair Mode function for a while.

I have other chargers but I also have a bunch of vehicle and a ton of batteries. I don't use them all often enough to keep the batteries charged. Eventually some end up low or dead. I do have some trickle chargers which are good for some batteries but especially the larger ones need something more powerful. This charger not only will charge the biggest batteries but you can leave it connected and it will switch to float mode to keep the battery charged. It has a repair mode and can handle most types of batteries including lead acid, AGM, gel and LiFePO4.
