Review: I've been an avid Great Teacher Onizuka reader since my early college years. Every other month I'd rush to the bookstore for the next GTO volume, eager to read the continuing adventures of the rebel teacher who could take beatings, bullets (I'd counted seven by the end of volume 25) and the smartest devil children, but never quite grew up himself. I was thrilled that I'd be getting more Onizuka in "14 Days in Shonan," which Vertical thankfully brought over to the US after Tokyopop folded. The new series had a few problems--mainly with continuity concerning technology and Vertical's layout choices--but it was a fun ride, like a wild night out with an old friend you haven't seen in awhile. But in seemingly no time at all, we've reached the end. Beyond this book, this seems to be it for the Onizuka saga, at least for a while; the only additional sequel to the GTO mythos seems to be a single volume of a series called "Great Transporter Ryuji" which focuses on Eikicki's longtime bro. I can't find any clarification as to whether GT-R is still ongoing or has been put down, and whether we will ever get it stateside. I have mixed feelings about "14 Days" volume 9. The story arc had a somewhat gratifying conclusion. The series as a whole...didn't. I was hoping for questions to be answered, romances to finally be recognized, and maybe some anecdotes about the students/adults from the first "Great Teacher Onizuka" that would give them a nice sendoff. Instead everything is wrapped up in a somewhat hasty package and the book's last half is dedicated to the first few chapters of what is apparently a sorta-spinoff series ("Black Diamond") with two characters from "14 Days in Shonan" but next to nothing with Onizuka. I read the book all the way to the other cover, hoping the ending I'd wished for would be stuck in the final few pages. It wasn't. Hopefully this isn't the end of the Onizuka mythos. Hopefully GT-R is still a thing. I'd like to see "GTO" conclude with an explosion and a ride off into the sunset--not like this.
