Do these work with musicast? Or some sort of app that you can pick which speakers to turn off and on (if I buy a few sets of them).

These are hard wired speakers. If you run the wires to something that powers them that you can control with an app, then you can control them with an app. Mine run through a Yamaha receiver with an HTD amp and and MC-66 controller. The Controller is controlled with an app.

Do you think 4 of these speakers would be good fit for a medium sized rec-room, acting as 2 front and 2 surround speakers?

Absolutely. I only have 2 mounted to the ceiling of my back porch for my yard and hot tub (in a fairly good sized back yard) and they are more than enough. Good quality of sound. Good looking. I think you'll like them. I was pleseantly surprised. For the price I wasn't expecting much but they are well worth the $$$.
