No. At the bottom is solid except for where the cord slides thru a small hole to attach to your wrist

First,You can attach spin-swivel(use the fishing line to tie a knot on the small hook),put on bite,put thumb on line in spool,then unwind about 10"-18" of line. When you feel tired or the fish has taken the hook, just pull the line back
