In the fall of 1940, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered a small team of scientists on a clandestine transatlantic mission to deliver his country's most valuable military secret - a revolutionary radar component - not to the U.S. government, but to a mysterious Wall Street tycoon, Alfred Lee Loomis. This much-honored PBS documentary series explores American history, one topic or person at a time. It's Peabody Award winners include profiles of FDR and Malcolm X, and such diverse topics as Nixon's 1972 trip to China, the controversy surrounding 'Citizen Kane' when it was released, and the Battle of the Bulge. In addition, it's Scottsboro Boys film won an Emmy, and seven entries (including the Scottsboro and Kane films) earned Oscar nominations

Very Informative.
I was amazed with all the technology that had to be invented.

Very informative
I had never heard of this man before and am very glad I watched this fascinating documentary. Next to learning more about an important part of our history I was fascinated (and distusted!) how such an intelligent person can be so successful and helpful to humanity but so create such horrific suffering to his own family. The human race never ceases to amaze me! I realize that most of us are a complex package deal of good and bad, but this guy pushed this to an extreme. I would like to know how he was able to live with himself, or how he had some semblance of peace in his own mind. I also don't understand how he was so driven up to the end of world war two and then was able to just step back and lead a simple life? Clearly more research is warranted for this complex individual and the friends he associated.

Decent but there's alot of clout chasing.
He was smart, he was affluent, he was also on the short-selling end of the depression, as they well tell you, and made millions during the depression and while everything else was happening he was playing in a lab with no limits. One can only look at the correspondence itself to see where his connections grew from and tended to that of the escaping populace of Europe during WWII.Save the world? He merely kicked the can down the world for the U.S.A. to be the next nation to depend on the military and meddling for success. He wasn't a good father, husband, or even that much of a person when he wasn't nerding out. Nope, if he was a truly saving anyone he would have debased war rather than giving us more weapons.

Really evil guy...
Heartless father, committed his wife to a remote mental institution so he could continue his affair with a married woman. Made Millions On The Backs of the suffering during the Depression and designed killing machines. Yeah, what a hero.
