Would this work to drill a hole in a desk made of solid wood (e.g. 1.5" thick mahogany)?

I've used one to go threw a 6" wood beam several times, plunge and chip out, plunge and chip out, plunge and chip out, 1 1/2" is simple, might want to use a drill press if you can.
