A great tool to have if you’re looking for an used car!
It did a good job of letting me know when a body panel had been repaired during my recent car search. Totally worth the price!

Maybe I’m just stupid X)
It's a good product, but it took me a long time to figure out the calibration, because no one told me that before pressing a key combination, the device should be turned off Xd

Useful when checking out used cars.
This item functions as advertised. I don't know if this is as accurate as a very expensive one, but this is great if you are checking out used cars. You can tell if there is bondo or has been repainted. Works on Aluminum and Metal. There is a calibration procedure and you can practice on your cars. Paint that is on door jambs is always thinner than paint on the body, and it is able to determine that.

No (zero) instructions
Seems to work, but no instructions in the box. The calibration method is not intuitive, and I only got it from reading other people's reviews.

Works great but must be calibrated
I got this device to measure the paint thickness on older cars we would consider for purchase. Comparing the difference in paint thickness on various panels can indicate any number of repairs or repainting performed. It works really well but must first be calibrated correctly which was initially a little confusing. Included in the package are 6 pieces of plastic samples of various thickness from .05mm to 2mm as well as an aluminum plate to place them on for calibration. After performing the 1st initial calibration procedure my unit proved to be very accurate in measuring the paint thickness on various cars. The aluminum plate simulates the cars base metal and the 6 plastic pieces serve to calibrate a range of paint thickness. The calibration process includes : A) Placing the aluminum plate and the 6 plastic samples in order. (You will be placing each thickness of plastic on top of the aluminum to take successive measurements.) B) Putting the device in calibration mode. ( While holding down the "up" key press the Power on key.) It's now ready to sequentially calibrate the aluminum and the 6 pieces of plastic one by one. C) Place the unit on the aluminum plate, wait for the beep and it should read "0" i.e. no thickness. D) Next place each of the 6 plastic pieces one by one on top of the aluminum plate and wait for the beep indicating the thickness measurement has been made. After the total of 7 measurements, Aluminum plate and 6 plastic thicknesses is made The word "End" will appear in the display indicating successful calibration. Note : The unit reads in um, mm and mils (Thousands of an inch) and defaults to um when turning it on. Pushing the "up" button cycles it thru the 3 units, make certain you are reading the correct units. It defaults to mm in the calibration mode as the test samples are in mm. The rest of the instructions are pretty typical and clearly written, the construction is high quality and the unit I received was accurate as far as I could determine on the few cars, a refrigerator, outdoor grill etc. that were sampled. So, highly recommended at it's price point.

DO NOT BUY THIS
Gives too many different readings it’s not accurate or close at all Even with calibration sheets I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT

Handy and appears accurate
I’m an avid auto enthusiast, and love buying cars (typically used) although not a huge fan of selling them. I am a fan of buying a car that has never been repainted in any way, much less in an accident. It gives me peace of mind that the car has no dark history. I’ve used paint meters in the past, but I left my “old” one at our 2nd home, and have been itching to buy a car locally. So I thought it was worth the effort to get a replacement meter. This is a nice meter on several levels, and it provides a kit to calibrate it. That just allows you to double check that the meter is functioning. In reality, when using a paint meter on a car, the idea isn’t so much about the specific thickness of the paint, but more the consistency from panel to panel. So it doesn’t matter to me if the paint is 7 microns thick or 5.3 microns thick so long as that is a reasonably consistent number from panel to panel. As I understand it, it is REALLY difficult for a local paint shop to get the thickness/consistency that the robots get at the factory. As I tested my SUV of 12 years, and since I know it’s full history, I got consistent readings , as expected. I double checked the meter by re-measuring the same place a couple times, and got consistency. So, this works perfectly for me. It is simple to setup and use for anyone. PROS: consistent readings, ability to calibrate with provided mediums CONS: none (wish it came with batteries though…) ACCURACY OF AMAZON LISTING: high BOTTOM LINE: nice meter, good price Of course, I’ll update this review should anything change.
