Great Resource
510 Essential Words for SSAT &ISEE starts with a brief description of the key methods it uses in helping students learn vocabulary and then jumps into its list of words. Each word is given the standard definition and sentence example but also provides the student with synonyms, antonyms, commonly used phrases, origins, Latin root, and commonly confused with words. This extra information builds a deeper understanding of the word and thus makes it more likely that the student will remember the word in the future, which is the ultimate goal. The other thing about this book that makes it one I like to use while tutoring is that at the end of each word set, which are 12 words long, there is a practice section. This allows for some interaction with the book, allowing it to go from theoretical to practical skills. These practices include matching words to synonyms and filling in the blanks in sentences to test definitions and being able to use the word using context. This book has 510 words which means that it holds a great deal of information that can really help students. I find this book to be great for use in tutoring students and to give to students to do on their own. This book is well organized and has thought through its lists and information to give the most meaningful and helpful material to students.I would definitely recommend this book as an excellent learning resource, especially while preparing for the SSAT/ISEE tests.

Simple word origin explanations make vocabulary memorable with 510 Essential Words for SSAT & ISEE
510 Essential Words for SSAT & ISEE (Lower/Middle) is a book used for teaching vocabulary. It puts words into sets of 12 and includes the dictionary definition and pronunciation. It then includes two example sentences the word is used in. Then it shows an antonym and synonym, but what I really like is that it also includes and easy to understand word origin and then explains the word in a way that helps students remember it.Also, the word selection is appropriate for Middle School.Sometimes, it tells a way the word is commonly misspelled or others extends the meaning, but I have found that all help me understand that words better than I would have be just looking at the definition. As the end of each word set, there is a quick review exercise where students can check their comprehension of the vocabulary presented.

Many mistakes in the sentences
There are a lot of grammar mistakes in the example sentences. Clearly this book was rushed out in a hurry. The point of a good vocabulary book is to teach students how to use the word in context. This book fails to do so.p. 121 It just the 3rd class and he already feels jaded.p. 41 Their wedding concurred with the holidays and celebrated both. These are just two of the MANY grammatically incorrect example sentences. Shame on this author.
