COMPARISON OF TOP THREE BRANDS
I am writing a review of three toilet cleaning systems I've bought here on amazon:Fluidmaster:Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based tablet.Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.Cartridge can be modified (I used a dremel) so it is easily refilled.NeverScrub:Uses a cartridge containing a chlorine based crystal.Cartridge is not meant to be refilled.Chlorine odor noticeable in the bathroom.Kaboom:Does not use a cartridge. Bromine tablet refill inserts directly by unscrewing a cap.No odor noticeable in the bathroom. All three of these systems work the same way and all are really easy to install. All of them put a toilet cleaning chemical (tablets or crystals) in-line between the water fill valve and the toilet bowl fill pipe. All of them prevent the chemical from getting into the tank water (so there is no damage to the plastic parts in the tank). All sell refills for their systems. All keep the toilet bowl equally clean for about 1-3 months depending on how often it is flushed.Amazon also sells Pool/Spa Cleaning Chlorine and Bromine tablets, which as far as I can tell do just as good a job keeping the toilets clean as the refills but at a fraction of the cost. I have tried all of the following, each of which provide enough tablets to keep all the toilets in the house clean for 10 years and they are all very cheap:Kem-Tek 177:The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. The bathroom has a slight chlorine odor.Spa-Kem 267:The tablets are too large to fit in the Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. No odor.Tropi Clear:The tablets fit well in the dremel-tool modified Fluidmaster cartridges. The tablets fit well in the Kaboom. No odor.Chlorine and Bromine are fairly equal in cleaning ability. Chlorine has that chlorine odor. Bromine is broken down by sunlight. Which is why, on a sunny day, outdoor pools use chlorine. But at night, or indoors, or on a cloudy day, they use bromine since there is no smell.Summary. The Fluidmaster system works but the cartridges are expensive. To refill the cartridges easily requires a small modification with a dremel tool. The cartridge is too small for any tablets larger than 1 inch in diameter. The NeverScrub system also works but the cartridges are expensive. What I am using is the Kaboom system with the bromine tablets (either the Tropi Clear or the Spa-Kem 267) as they have no odor and clean just as well as the chlorine tablets.

Use it!
This is the STARTER KIT you use to set up the system. You only have to buy this once for each toilet. There is a different box (same colouring, slightly smaller) that contains ONLY refills! (A three pack for about $12) Make sure you are ordering the correct thing! PLUS, you CAN NOT use the refills without this! It would be like trying to walk your dog without actually having a dog!If you're even slightly handy this is easy to install. It hangs INSIDE the tank, and you have to reroute the bowl fill hose to use it. BE AWARE that there ARE a very small number of toilets that CANNOT use this device! Before you order, go take the lid off the toilet tank and make sure you have a (usually black, but sometimes white) hose about the diameter of a pencil running from the filler control to the overflow tube in the center of the tank. If you can't find this, or look and can't figure out what I'm describing, then you probably can't install this.I do house cleaning and every time I get a new client I install one of these in each of their toilets. Makes my cleaning job SO MUCH EASIER! It has a SLIGHT odor of a swimming pool which I can detect when I flush the toilet. If I don't smell it, I check the unit and usually have to install new tablets. A package (with two tablets) lasts about 3 months in an averagely used toilet. Finally, this is a cleaning assistant, not a cleaning replacement! You still have to grab a brush and scrub the inside of the bowl with a proper toilet cleaner. Just not as often or as vigorously. It helps keep mold from growing at the waterline, keeps the smell of urine washed away, and softens the calcium ring at the water line so that you don't have to pumice it as often or as hard (if you have hard water). Finally, DON'T USE THIS PRODUCT IF YOU HAVE PETS THAT DRINK FROM THE TOILET! IT WILL KILL THEM!

No Oxi-Clean
Bought this cause the pictures box shows “with Oxi-Clean”. I did NOT get a box “with Oxi-Clean”. Paid extra for this cause I could of got this without Oxi-Clean for $3 less with and extra refill. Can’t return it even though product not as described. Dispenser is just as functional. Easy to hook up to my 20 year old toilet. Will order for other toilets, getting the cheaper one with the extra refill.

It really is a power cleaner...before the smell
I'm in. I haaaaaate cleaning the toilet. Now, I hate it marginally less. This is great stuff. I was skeptical at first. But it really does clean those stains in the bowl. I mean, the parts of the bowl that doesn't touch water still need to be scrubbed, but the bowl itself is now "self-cleaning". The instructions say to clean the toilet first and then install. Like a brat, I did not. I wanted to see what this stuff could do with what was there. And the stains are gone. Installation: easy. And I'll be buying the refills when that time comes. Biggest problem is the smell - like a faint chlorine pool smell. So, keep a window open, if possible. Some people might be bothered by the smell. But I hate cleaning the toilet more. Pick your battles.

Expensive but worth it. Get it.
At first, it looks too expensive for what it is, however, it is a very good idea and product. The bottom tub(drop-down) tablets release cleaning agents to the whole tub and it does prevent germs in the tub too but it also corrodes ALL the rubber, plastic, and metal parts. It will create more leaks and shorten the life of all the internal submerged parts. This system cleans and prevents germs where they matter most with almost no sent. The replacement tablets are also somewhat expensive but these last 3 months not 15 days like the blue drop-down tablets. Use quality products where the mist of chemicals will plume up every time you flush.
