Most BEAUTIFUL book I’ve read in a long while!!
Whether your curious about Native culture, or a tribal member wanting to further your knowledge, or a reconnecting Native American this book is absolutely beautifully written- I checked it out of our tribal library so I could have a better understanding of the flower dance and after the first couple chapters I went and purchased it so I could highlight certain sections & I not have to return to the library! Lol- I am wanting to try to have a flower dance for my daughters and this book gave me a lot of absolutely essential knowledge to where I have a lot better understanding of the ceremony now! I appreciate more then anything when traditional knowledge is shared!

Critical Book for Native American Women and All Women
A beautiful book which lays bare the fact that colonialism brutalized and tried to destroy the Native American Women. Thankfully, with scholars like Risling-Baldy, they can live more powerfully again. Following the academic threads in the book is important, but my second reading will be skipping over the hard academics for the deep heart of the author's unique intelligence and perspective. I bought two. One for our family and one for our library. And will continue to buy for more libraries as time goes on. Every woman can benefit from reading this book to understand that the dominator point of view of colonialism and its continuing embodiment through unbridled capitalism, will not work for our collective future. We will borrow from this book for our children.

Feminism a must for decolonizing
Excellent, well written and brings a feminist perspective to decolonizing California.

Much needed, beautifully written
This book is so important for Indigenous people (particularly women and people raising women) everywhere. It is a testament to Indigenous people doing research work themselves and documenting the revitalization of their much needed traditions. Also contains a very concise and solid history of the experience of colonization for California Indians.

Best book I’ve read this year
Best book I’ve read this year. Wonderful mix of historical research and personal narratives. It’s liberating to see a piece of work that focuses solely on the experiences of Native and Indeginous women, as so much of the literature and research that exists leaves women out of the narrative. Amazing book, most highly recommended.

Ceremony and survivance
An excellent book on coming of age ceremonies for girls, one that does not perform ethnography but demonstrates the importance of ceremony to Native survivance.
