Used water in the bottom but maybe sand would be better other than that they do the job

Utterly Useless
How does the manufacturer have the brass neck to sell something so utterly useless.The S hooks for the chain to hang on and attach to the poles are too small. Impossible to attach the chain to the hook.Rigid plastic with no give.Do not buy this.I am returning it.
