Have a Question? See What Others Asked

Will the alarm sound when it cools to a certain temperature, or just when it heats to a certain temperature?
How long is the probe?
Does it NEED minimum amount of liquid in the pan (2" or something) in order for it to work accurately ?? Or will it work even for small batch ?
Even though it has pre-programmed temperatures, can i program this for making yogurt? the high i want is 180 and the low i want is 110. thanks : - )

Accurate and easy to use

Perfect for all cooking that needs a certain temp. I thought about a digital thermometer but I always used this easy read one. It is very easy to read. Sits securely in my pot and I don’t have to replace a battery Cleaning is just a swish under running water

Super durable

TLDR; really stands up to the test of time.I have had this thermometer for nearly five years. Originally purchased to make candy and caramels but it is now a staple in our kitchen. But here is the wildest test for it that I do not recommend. I was baking a large cut of meat. Set the thermometer to the desired temperature and inserted in to the meat. My kids came barreling in to the kitchen arguing so I shut the oven door for "just a second" to shoo them out. I obviously got distracted and resumed my other cooking. Twenty minutes later I hear beeping coming from the oven that the temperature has been reached. I fly to the oven to save the thermometer but the screen was completely black and not operational. I put the thermometer on the counter to return to after dinner and search the brand name to replace it. A couple of hours later I returned to find that the screen was back to normal! I have continued using it without issue! Would not recommend using the thermometer in the oven but keep hope if you accidentally do.

Awesome

I make maple syrup and while I do own a standard candy thermometer, I love that I can set this to sound an alarm at any temp I want. While making syrup there are different temperatures that I check sugar content, filter, draw off and bottle. This has allowed me to have a audible alarm sound off at each phase of the process. I do not have great hearing but find the alarm to be plenty loud especially in the same room. I don't know how loud it would be from across your house but if we're being honest, anything you are using this for probably requires near constant attention so I'm sure you are near it anyhow. As a side note, I dropped this not once but twice into 3 gallons of boiling hot syrup and after wiping down with a damp paper towel it still works fine.

Great thermometer

I have had one of these for many years. I use it for candy making. I finally had to replace my first one after at least 8 years. Never replaced the battery but the digital readout faded and was unreadable.I love the alarm that tells you when you are getting close to temp. The clip fits easily on the pot and stays in place. Highly recommend this if you need accurate temperature readings.

Perfect for infant milk bottles

I am definitely not using this for its intended purpose, but I've tried several different thermometer options and this one has come closest to being perfect. When warming a bottle for a baby, I wanted 5 things, in order of importance:1. Being able to set an alarm at a specific temperature2. Constant updates so that you don't go over temperature3. Being able to easily position the thermometer in the bottle while it is warming in a bottle warmer4. Being able to easily clean5. Being able to _remember_ the alarm, so that you don't need to reprogram every time you turn on the thermometer6. being backlit so it can be easily read in the darkMost thermometers I've tried only meet some of this criteria, but this one has met all the requirements except the last. If this was back-lit, it would be perfect, but it would also probably drastically reduce the battery life. Also the alarm goes off 3 degrees or so before it actually meets temperature, but its easy enough to increase the target temperature to compensate.Of particular note: the heat shield makes it perfect for positioning the device over an open bottle!

Did not last long

I have had this thermometer for less than 6 months, and it stopped working. It has an automatic turn off setting, so it could be the battery that died, but that’s not that long for batteries to have to be replaced. I didn’t want to waste time or money buying new batteries to replace. Also, when I did use it, it doesn’t hold well to the sauce pan. Stirring the contents, and when slightly touching it, it falls and has to be repositioned constantly. It’s quite annoying, especially when working with very hot things.

Works as expected

I've used this thermometer only twice so far and it does the job. The dial type of candy thermometers that I used before require several inches of syrup depth in order for the thermometer to get a reading; their thermosensors were actually a couple inches above the tip of the probe. Since many candy recipes have only a few cups of sugar syrup being cooked, you'll need a good thermometer with the sensor at the tip.I checked the accuracy of the CDN candy thermometer with boiling water and it was accurate to within one or two degrees. Unlike other reviewers, I had no problem reading the numbers on the thermometer while it was hooked on the pot; there are settings for it to tilt back and forth.I agree with the other reviewers that you'll need a pot without a lip for the thermometer to stay put on the side. A straight sided pot is also better. I bought such a stainless steel 2 quart pot from Walmart for $30 and its perfect for most of those candy recipes.I read the complaint from other reviews about the lack of an off button. But fudge recipes require at least an hour to an hour and a half for the cool down to 110 degrees; this thermometer is meant to stay on in the pot to monitor this. It doesn't bother me that there is no alarm for the cool down. It will turn off automatically when the temperature stays below 104 degrees for one hour.I also like that you could set ANY target temperature and it would alert three degrees below; great for deep frying. It could also do a good job as a meat thermometer; the sensor at the tip makes it easier to place the probe right where you need it at the exact center of the food unlike other meat thermometers where the sensor is somewhere above the tip and you could get a false reading that the food is done. The only negative I see would be to find the replacement of the tiny batteries.
