Just right. - They are spicy. Not too spicy but not too mild. It’s a matter of personal preference. - Most importantly the taste is great. - No, I don’t work for them! Review: As Good As It Gets - These are as close to the original penrose sausage in the jar that I grew up eating. My family used to bring jars back to NYC whenever they traveled south. There is no other pickled sausage that could touch that unique penrose original. I assume that when Conagra purchased Penrose, the sale didn't come with the exact recipe. It hurts that that appears to be forever gone. Although these do not have the same texture, the taste is closer than any other brand I've tried. I'm pleased.

These are bad for you
These are very bad for you. Eat two and you've already exceeded your daily dose of sodium. Of course, they never claimed not to be bad for you. They taste good, and they are an incredible value. Regardless of where you stand on how bad these are for you, they are a perfect bugout-bag survival type food in a world where long-term health concerns are not at the top of your list.

Only place to get em'...
I'll admit it's an "acquired" taste and one that may mostly be familiar with military personnel. I used to buy these & Big Mamas (a bigger version) while stationed aboard Camp Pendelton (USMC) but could not find them anywhere on the civilian market (along with beanies & weenies?). Now I order them by the case/box since these are the smaller ones & individually wrapped and keep them in the cupboard for that "spicy" meat taste (munchy) I get every once in a while. These things have a shelf-life similar to Twinkies, making them an option for camping, traveling or just staying prepared for emergencies...or the occasional late-night munchies. Bon Appetit. ~B FYI - I also keep a jar of pickled eggs in the fridge for the same kind of (munchy) fix.

The best snack out there
Now, for the price, this is the best value you can find for a bulk snack item. These came completely enclosed in their own box, which had no dent or dings, or evidence that they had been dropped. I have always been a fan of these, and I would definitely recommend them to anyone.

... keto snack but didn't know which one I would enjoy the most
So I recently bought 3 different brands of hot sausages because I needed them for a quick keto snack but didn't know which one I would enjoy the most. Soooooo, you all get to benefit from my experiment! The brands I purchased were Herb's, Penrose and Hannah's. Here's what I think: Overall, all of the boxes came kind of beat up. That's okay for my home use. If you wanted to use these for some kind of display, like in an office, you would need something else to put them in because the boxes would be tacky with how beat up they are! #1 - Herb's, hands down, was the best sausage! Of the 3, it had the best flavor (a strong spicy flavor without overwhelming heat) and texture. Made with beef and chicken in cause you're wondering. The box came in the best shape and it's expiration date was the furthest out (April, 2019). I don't think I'll need sausages again EVER, but if I do, it will be Herb's without hesitation. #2 - Really tough choice but I'm going to go with Penrose. Made with chicken and pork. Flavor was right on with Herb's but the texture was kinda off. Hard to explain but just kinda felt more processed/fake (I know, I know, they're all processed...). The texture completely through me off though. The box was the most damaged and the expiration date the closest (November 2018) #3 - Again, probably more of a tie with Penrose. The texture was fine but it's lacking in flavor. Perhaps it's missing a few things from the seasoning package. Made with chick and beef. Box was okay, but still damaged. Expiration March 2019. Ultimately, there's really only one option for me. If Herb's is OOS, I just won't be buying sausages. I'm spoiled. Either the best or nothing!
