Watch out ! this is not a 2014 new book !
Any lover of Joan Eardley should have this book but don't get caught out like me - this is NOT a new 2014 book as the description suggests but a reprint of the Edinburgh exhibition catalogue of 2007 which of course I already have. . .Why did the N.G . of Scotland decide to change the cover ?!! To fool us ? Can we not start a campaign to try and get amazon to publish the dates of the edition of the books for sale . Its not difficult !

Joan Eardley.
This is a fine, general book on Eardley, a re-print of the NGS 2007-8 exhibition catalogue. There are 94 illustrations, including some black and white photographs, but the vast majority are in colour and represent her entire range of work; from her celebrated city paintings featuring the tenements and children of Glasgow`s Hillhead, to the landscape and breathtaking seascapes of Catterline. The reproduction quality is a shade on the light side, but the plates are satisfyingly large and clear. The texts provide a fairly comprehensive overview of Eardley`s life and work, making this a very useful reference and introduction to an artist long overdue the wider appreciation her work deserves. The best reference work on Eardley available at the moment (and with the best reproductions of her work) is this one Joan Eardley but this paperback makes an acceptable alternative, as Andreae`s book is becoming increasingly expensive.Currently a reasonably priced and readily available volume, this should have a place in the library of anyone with an interest in good, expressive painting.

Celebration of an amazing female artist
What a delight this book is. Written for an exhibition of Eardley's work originally, there is a balanced approach both in the images used and description of her life, influences and art. Not celebrated or recognised enough outside her native Scotland Eardley's wonderful handling of oil paint, her vibrant palette and of course, her subject matter are relevant today as they were in a post war Britain. She has none of the sombreness of most of her contemporaries and seems to relish the humanity and energy in the children and land of her country and her art still resonates. So sad that she passed away relatively young and one gets the feeling the best was yet to come and that would have surely cemented her place as one of the greats of her time.

Not entirely what was expected judging by the cover alone.
Very prompt delivery. Not entirely what was expected judging by the cover alone. The imagery is of a good quality reproduction mostly the figurative work by the artist. I was hoping for more works depicting her approach to landscape. Never the less a good insight into the works of Eardley. May not of purchased knowing limited landscape representation.

A valuable purchase for anyone discovering Eardley's work
A wonderful overview of much underrated artist. Eardley deserves a much more central place in the story of mid-century British art than she currently has.

Another book to re-read and make notes, the land/seascapes are what interest me but I am finding that the paintings of the Glasgow children are growing on me - I would like to know how they turned out!
