Technically works. Practically? Hm…
This device is relatively attractive, which is nice. It also seems to be fairly simple to use on its own, but I haven’t tested it with an actual source of natural gas and can’t speak to its sensitivity or accuracy. This device also has a couple major downsides:1. It has to be plugged in directly on the back (no cord). Positioning the device near the ceiling, where methane collects and where methane sensors (as opposed to propane sensors, which can be plugged in near the floor) should normally be positioned, will be impractical for must users. Who has an outlet on the ceiling or within six inches of the ceiling and within a few feet of the source of natural gas? The device was originally described as running on a battery, which was why I bought this product, but that product description has been corrected to reflect that the device is plug-in only.2. Although the device is ZigBee, so it can technically pair with SmartThings, the pairing is in name only, as no device handlers exist at the time I’m writing this description (June 8, 2018). So the device shows up for me in SmartThings as a generic ZigBee device named, “Tiles Missing,” with no functionality whatsoever. I think you must have the Heiman hub to use this sensor over ZigBee, so be aware of that, but the audible alarm should still function, even if you can’t use the device over ZigBee.I wouldn’t buy this device again because I bought it to use it as a ZigBee gas detector with SmartThings, which works only in theory and not in practice at this time. If you want a simple natural gas sensor (which is all I can use this device as right now), you can choose from any number of competitor products that provide better value. I would recommend this device only to users who already use the Heiman ZigBee hub.
