It is an actual authentic linux disc.
So this is the real thing. But is is outdated. I suspect that they may give you the update software patches for this if you use it. I don't know if you can still get a complete linux install disk from linux anymore. So the internet browser is probably already installed into the OS. You probably do not have to manually configure anything.

I love the fact that people around the world are coming ...
I have all ways wanted to get as far from Mircosoft as far as I legally can. I love the fact that people around the world are coming up with alternatives to MS. Previously I have only dipped my finger into community software. I have used Firefox and Open Office for a number of years. Both can be used on almost any PC. Why pay MS for basic technology like word processing, that how old? Well, I have always wanted to try a Linux build. I was aware that it could be messy. I have had an old MS XP desktop machine for a long time. The only huge changes to it, where memory upgrades, drive replacements and a few other minor enhancements. I managed to scrape together a Vista install and the machine still needed Firefox to be of use and a ton of updates to run about anything. Fun, trying to upgrade but nightmare. So I originally bought these Linux disk (I,m lazy, and you get 32 and 64 bit versions) to try to upgrade an even older Pentium 4 machine. The Linux build sorta fired up on the old machine but drive speed, CPU speed, and lack of a few things made that more of a Linux puppy machine, but even after that it was a little fussy. So I decided to load Liinux Ubuntu on my better, yet old XP machine. The install went quickly and it managed to install everything but a Netgear USB WIFI dongle. My search on the net said that was not a very happy LINUX compatible dongle and so I was at sorta an impasse. This machine needed to be on the net. Hey I like Facebook. I then remembered I had a plug in USB wifi adapter, an Edimax EW-781 11n. When I plugged that in Linux automatically indicated I had WIFI and would I like to sign in, with its fairly straight forward communication program in the visual frontend. I found out later its chipset is pretty simple. If you look up Linux modems on Amazon you can find it or its sister listed. Most Linux modems have standard chipset that this release of Linux can find. I suggest if you want to get into this, and I am an absolute beginner, you may want to start with an older machine that you can mess up and even reset as you learn how to use this stuff. The GUI is pretty simple, and you can download packages from Ubuntu site or unpack a lot of good stuff off the DVD. I am basically using the included FIREFOX browser, possibly upgraded, to browsing, another package to handle my gmail, VLC (on distro, I think) for music and video. I needed a flash plugin for Firefox to stream media on several sites. I did not need Thunderbird email. I hope to maintain the machine and learn more about Linux as I use it. I would warn people that using terminal can be a big learning curve and to approach it with caution, or just try simple things first.
