Essentially Nothing More Than Postcards, But Crucial From a Historical Perspective
Ok, my 3 star review is a little unfair because I am allowing my opinion of Atget's work to color the actual design and presentation of the book. At a perfectly purse sized dimension, with exhaustive selections from every Arrondissement, the book itself is lovely. I greatly enjoy its design and organization. That said, about halfway through the book I began to unfortunately see Atget's work through my modern photographer's eye. Atget, to me, with four to five distinct exceptions, is not an artist. He is, rather, a craftsmen. He provided a service of vast historical significance, recording the gradual destruction of Medieval and Enlightenment Paris as it constantly reinvented itself decade to decade. For this reason, his work is priceless as a documentary record of those things completely lost to time and 'progress'. But I cannot call him an artist, as I can Brassai, because essentially what he created were postcards. Very beautiful postcards, but postcards none the less. His eye is not romantic or provocative or abstract or interested in mood or emotion in any sense other than perhaps nostalgia. He simply points his lens at a street corner and with no frills and with no particular artistic agenda, releases his shutter. So, historically the book is interesting, but it gets boring and repetitive at about the 7th Arrondissement. I completely understand his place in the history of photography, but he is a historian, a documentarian, an absolutely objective, scientific eye. This has its uses, but inspiring, provoking, challenging or destroying the status quo is not his intent. You may love this, and I am happy to have this book, but it does not have the romance of Brassai.
