Kids Loved the Taste, But Didn't Help Them Sleep
My almost 11 year old has struggled with insomnia for most of her life, and since starting school several years ago I've had to give her melatonin on school nights so she can go to bed at a reasonable time and not at 3-5am. Consistent long term melatonin supplementation is NOT good for you though and research shows that it can both speed up and delay puberty, as well as effect ovulation in post-pubescent females, among other things! My daughter is already showing early signs of puberty several years before I did! I only give her melatonin on school nights so she isn't too tired for school, and on the weekends and during the summer I just let her fall asleep when she's ready. (Which was consistently 5-10am this entire summer!) My 8 year old also takes melatonin on school nights now because otherwise she's up until about 11 or 12, which is far too late for a school night.I have taken magnesium supplements for a couple years and the 525mg magnesium glycinate complex chelated capsules I use have had great results at combating my insomnia and helping me fall asleep, to the point I no longer need to take my muscle relaxers or sleeping pills to help me fall asleep. So I sought out to find a liquid magnesium supplement for my kids since my 8 year old can't swallow pills yet and my almost 11 year old prefers not to. I found this product and it had 4.6 stars with over 150 reviews, many talking about how it helped their kids sleep and worked great, and I was super excited to order it and start giving it to my kids so I could stop giving them melatonin so I ordered it in Strawberry! When the product arrived I was surprised by how small the bottles were, although I did know they were only 1 oz bottles. But seeing them in person made me realize this was going to be a pretty expensive alternative to melatonin, but worth it. I gave it to both my older kids that night and they both loved the taste, my 8 year old said it tasted like cotton candy or some other kind of candy. But an hour went by and they weren't getting tired at all. Another hour went by, same thing. Eventually I ended up having to give them both melatonin so they could fall asleep. We repeated this process for 3 or 4 days and every time it was the same exact result, absolutely no help in falling asleep! MIND YOU, this supplement is 1,000mg of magnesium glycinate as opposed to my 525mg capsules that work really well for me. That makes zero sense to me that a higher dose in a much smaller body has a significantly lower effect!I'm giving the product 3 stars because of how great it tastes and I'm sure it's beneficial to some and in other ways than just sleep such as muscle health, bone health and digestion. But it's a 0/10 stars for me on sleep aid. I didn't even bother looking to see if I could return it because I'm pretty sure you can't return supplements. It was definitely a waste of almost $20 for me.
