Not a MaxTrax...and i'm OK with that...
The industry standard for recovery traction devices is MaxTrax...and they are totally awesome. They'll also cost you around $300 or more. The X-BULL version cost me $59 on Amazon for the pair. Do the math...I can burn through 5 sets of X-BULLs before reaching the $300 MaxTrax price point. Are they are as durable as the top tier product? Of course not...but if you are looking for a product that you may need off-road only once in a while (or just as peace of mind)...then perhaps you don't need to spend the $300 for the best product on the market. I've rarely needed to use a traction pad after decades of off-roading in sand along the Texas coast/beaches, gumbo mud in Southeast Texas, rocky slop trails in Virginia and Pennsylvania, or on the rocks in Moab (I actually stacked a couple of rocks instead). Inevitably, you may need to use this set to self-recover or use them to help a fellow off-roader out of a tough spot. At this price ($59), you can almost call them a disposable item. The X-BULL is so much better of an option than my 'younger man' days of shoving logs, sticks, pieces of lumber, etc. under your tires to give you just enough bite to sling muddy rooster tails on your buddies helping push you out (ah! the good ol' days - thanks buds!). They are tough, well made and will serve their purpose in multiple settings. To avoid UV deterioration (which also affects the MaxTrax by the way), I keep them inside the vehicle. The X-BULLs do not stack as cleanly as MaxTrax, but that's not a huge factor for me. Plus, they came in a cheap black zipper bag with a carrying handle, which will likely never survive the first time you try to shove a muddy or abused pair back inside...but it's a nice touch. So be prepared - if you store them inside - it could get messy...but typically if you have to take these out, you are probably messy already. I feel the need to remind customers purchasing traction devices, you are buying these to run over - typically in gnarly terrain - to get you out of a jam, unstuck, or over a difficult approach. You will scuff ANY brand up even if you run them over in your driveway or spin out your tires on them. Traction pads are meant to be another tool in your off-road kit that can be used to solve problems on the trail. HINT: Winches, snatch straps, tow ropes, jacks, etc. are also other tools that can aid in recovery. Look online for a review video by some great overlanding Australian YouTubers - "Which is the best 4x4 Recovery Tracks" (08 FEB 2020) who did "tests" on all the various types of traction devices on the market. The X-BULLs held up to some of their ridiculously brutal trials. Did they win? No. Were they the worst? Not even close. They held up sufficiently to be highly competitive all-around in my opinion, and extremely affordable for the average off-roader who'd rather spend $300 on more important upgrades to their rigs. MaxTrax are unquestionably the absolute best...but to me, these XBULL's are the 'everyman off-roader's - more than good enough!' Happy trails!

Survived Two Freightliners!
No one will probably believe me but these things just got a 30,000lb two axle Freightliner propane truck unstuck! The rear tires were sunk 3-4 inches in mud and probably 3ft from solid ground. The truck was able to crawl right out with only damaging one of the tracks. The damaged track is definitely still usuable for something lighter. I can not believe how well these cheap tracks work. Way cheaper and quicker than a tow truck. I'm not saying they will always work for 30,000+lb vehicles but they worked well tonight. I'm sure they'll work just fine for any Jeeps or pickup trucks. Edited to add that the same tracks just got used on a 50,000lb truck (I took a picture this time also). One is bent and cracked but they got another truck out of the mud and are still usuable.

Updated - Company fixed issue.
Updated 12/28/22: The company reached out regarding my experience with trying to exchange the boards, and they were very kind and helpful. I still haven’t used the boards, but the customer service was great. I purchased the black recovery boards after hearing great things from a friend who recently needed to use his set. I didn’t want to spend hundreds on the big name option, so this seemed like a good alternative. However, when my set arrived they appeared used and/or damaged in production or shipping. Some of the knobs were broken off, and there were chunks missing on the sides. This wasn’t a big deal for me - I reached out to the company for next steps/replacement. Seemed like an easy exchange. Unfortunately, the company never responded and completely blew me off. I was able to initiate a return through Amazon after I explained the company wasn’t responding, so the issue is (thankfully) resolved. I’m sure the boards work great (seemed sturdy, good recommendations).

These boards are rock solid!
Alright…. I’ve used these boards several times. But tonight they got a hard workout!! I drive a 9,000 lb F350 and went to my property up in the mountains. Temps hard warmed to about 50 deg with plenty of snow on the ground. I was also towing a 5,000 lb trailer. After backing in and realizing it was a terrible idea, my truck basically sunk to the axles! After about 30 min of digging out mud I finally got the boards in place. Gave it a little bump backwards and then eased into the gas forward and it climbed right up on the boards and got me up. Seriously this is no joke…. Without these boards I would still be stuck on a dark mountain overnight. Even though the boards are covered in mud and weigh 50 lbs a piece I looked them over and don’t see any damage or bending! You can see in the first photo the board did exactly what it should. The second you can see the board is embedded with mud and did its job perfectly!! Save yourself some money and get these boards!!! They do not disappoint and will save you an expensive recovery!!!

Can’t wait to get stuck
These come with the mounting brackets as shown. They are easy to install in most situations and I can’t wait to get stuck so I can use them and see how well they work. I like the look and they are lightweight. They also come with a rubber lined bag which is pretty thoughtful so the grime stays inside the bag and I like the size. The only remaining question is are they as good as the hype and I can’t wait to see.

impressively durable and life saving
I spent thousands of dollars on a winch bumper and winch for a remote elk hunt in Wyoming. I originally ordered 1 black set of these boards, and last minute got another set in olive, thinking if the winch couldn't help, it would be good insurance. I used the four boards in multiple scenarios in 10-14" of snowfall when we were inches from a drop off. Both situations required us going backward, not forward (winch was front mounted). These boards are magic! I saw reviews of them melting. I have pretty good off road tires and I went slow, usually in 4 low but not always, and the tires just grabbed the boards and walked right out of our sticky situations. I even used them to help a fella in chevy avalanche who had BFG AT's. We were 3 hours drive from cell service and the closest person was probably 2 hours drive. I am a believer! Additionally, I use a rooftop tent and used these to level the vehicle on uneven ground. Even in -10*F temps they did not crack, and I have a fully loaded 3/4 ton Excursion. After several recoveries and parking on them overnight several times as well, they are still good as new. Not a single bend, crack, or melt. I wish I'd taken pictures of our sticky situations we used them in, but we were entirely too occupied with concentrating on not falling down a ravine at the time. But I attached photos of using them for leveling under my stupid heavy rig. Updated 1/28/19 to show how I mounted them with ratchet straps to my spare tire. I was also able to slide a cable lock through the holes molded into the boards for theft prevention.

Good deal.
Cheaper than other comparable products and should work great, haven't had to use them yet. Mounting hardware is a little cheap, but works for me.
