“12 Strong” is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans—accustomed to stateof- the-art warfare—must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghan horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.

A well executed fairly standard patriotic war movie based on a true story
Everything is nearly flawless: from the telling of the story to the camera work. I wish I had watched it earlier. The movie is based on true events. In response to the 9/11 attack in 2001, the Bush administration declared the War on Terror. The first team inserted in Afghanistan was a CIA team (their leader is played in this movie). They were carrying a lot of cash and most of the 8 team members were acting as civilians. The 2nd response team was a 12-man fully armed US army special forces detachment, ODA 595, which is the focus of this movie, later expanded to 14 men (not mentioned in this movie). The 3rd response team was another army special forces detachment (not played in this movie, but mentioned), who arrived in Afghanistan roughly at the same time. They all worked together in helping the local Afghan forces to capture a large city that had become a Taliban and Al Qaeda stronghold. As far as the US military history is concerned, a most unique thing done by this small band of US soldiers was that they rode horses into battle, though only 1 of them had ever been trained in horse riding. The last time US soldiers fought on horseback was during WW2.Of course, this is not a documentary, but a dramatized account of a story.By the way, this is also a fairly "standard" patriotic movie.

Outstanding newer war movie
12 Strong was a really powerful movie that tells the story of the first U.S. Special Forces team sent into Afghanistan after 9/11. It does a great job showing both the intensity of the battles and the bond between the soldiers. The action scenes feel authentic without being overdone, and there’s a real sense of courage and sacrifice. It follows in the tradition of great movies like Guns of Navarone.
