Learn about life and love from a Pharisee?If this movie is true, I believe Darwin would have been comforted to believe the truth, that God related all things not by birth and succession, but since the first ones were made, who were not babies - those first ones He all related to each other already, and all were related to Him.I believe he, like any other person who has found truth in God at the tail end of many years, would have been able to look upon his book, and upon the twenty years of its work and understanding, not as wasted but as a network of people he met and loves, as a lifetime of adventure and discovery, as a peering into the heart of God, as a diligence and fervor that will always find object and muse and Spirit, and as a gift even while he must deny his initial conclusion and induction. Many have "walked away from Omelas" only because love greater than they could have dreamed was found true, not because they couldn't take it anymore.Spoiler alert. Their Annie's illness and being taken would have hurt just as much, though. Feeling like God is having vengeance or ruthlessly teaching a lesson would feel the same, but Yahweh would also be the same before and after her life and death, before and after the life they lived without having and holding her as she was and as she grew; He would be revealing everything to the world, but only those who sought after Him would be gaining knowledge and understanding, strength to endure and comfort in weakness, the puzzle pieces and the image.Amen to those who loved Darwin, who showed him what love feels like again when he was tired of denying it and choosing bludgeoning instead. He knew its truth when he felt it - he had lived with it and given it before; he just needed a homecoming event to be thrown in his favor to light the way back.Any sins that we commit before knowing Jesus, and any after knowing Him, are a rough preamble to being reassured at judgment that His work was done, finished, irreversible in our lives, that the union is forever and is the pleasure of both Him and the Father, and that we always could come home no matter how far we wandered or hard we fought.This film and surely the book teach us what is left without love, and with love. The desert cactus yields honey and grows tall; the many fallen or killed sparrows have rest, and they forerun the one sacrifice and ours afterward.Darwin held onto what felt right, and that steadfastness paid off, and would have paid off even if he suddenly believed God and renounced his reasonings and writing.

Many people will be familiar with the creationist-fueled furore this movie ignited in the United States, but after watching this movie the most striking conclusion that can be drawn from the controversy (as opposed to about the movie itself) is that creationists love to condemn things sight unseen. Far from being an attack on anyone's faith, the movie tells a very moving and very human story about the life, loves, and sufferings of Charles Darwin and his loved ones against the backdrop of writing the Origin of Species. Indeed, though the moviemakers most likely consciously courted controversy by their choice of title, the "creation" referred to is arguably the creative process of writing that famous work.Though laced with quotes from Darwin's magnum opus, the movie will not tell you much about science or the details of the theory of descent with modification by natural selection (Darwin himself never called it evolution), and though the story does not shrink from raising the many thorny emotional questions and tensions between evolution and faith, it wisely refrains from taking sides. Indeed, some might even object that it portrays the champions of faith, such as Darwin's devoted friend reverend John Innes, in a more sympathetic light than the champions of science, in particular Thomas Huxley's rather unkind cameo, which plays the only slightly sour note in the movie.More than about the theory or the conflict, however, the story of the movie is a very human story. It shows Charles Darwin as a very caring and thoughtful man, a deeply loving parent (a notable rarity in victorian times), haunted (quite literally, but not at all in the way we have come to expect from horror movies) by the ghost of his beloved oldest daughter, and tormented both by crippling physical illness (historically accurate and unexplained to this day) and by the emotional rift the conflict of conscience and faith is driving between him and his wife. The larger issues are ever looming in the background, but the story is first and foremost about people and how they deal with the challenges that life throws them, the questions they ask, the answers they find, the things they deem worth fighting for, and the way they deal with the loss of whom and what they hold dear.The movie can afford to make strong claims about historical authenticity. Much of the dialogue has been based directly on authentic letters and other historical documents. Many of the locations are literally the ones where the actual events took place, and many of the props are the actual objects and furnishings once belonging to the Darwin family and preserved at Down House and in other museum collections. In spite of this near-documentary attention to historical accuracy, the movie manages to avoid falling into the trap of didacticism, in large part thanks to the superb acting skills not just of lead actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, but of a solid supporting cast including such flawless portrayals as Jeremy Northam's reverend Innes and Bill Paterson's doctor Gully, proving once again that there are no small parts, only small actors.One final note on Martha West, whose Oscar-worthy portrayal of Annie makes her without doubt the best child actor I have seen since well before Harry Potter. I think she is destined for great things (beyond what she has already achieved here) and I can't wait to see her on the screen again.

Dieser Kinofilm aus dem Darwin-Jahr 2009 hat sich die Entstehungsgeschichte des so kontroversen wie wissenschaftsverändernden victorianischen Bestsellers "The Origin of species" (1859) zum Thema gemacht.Als Vorlage diente das Buch des Darwin-Nachfahren Rainald Keynes, "Annie's Box" (neu aufgelegt mit dem Film-Tie-in von "Creation").Beeindruckend und bedrückend zugleich wird der jahrelange innere Kampf dargestellt, den Charles Darwin mit seinen die Grundfesten der christlichen Religion erschütternden wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen austrägt. Die Evolutionstheorie, nach der die Natur ein einziges "battlefield" ist, auf dem allein der Stärkere überlebt, scheint den Glauben an eine Gott gewollte Ordnung und einen höheren Sinn des Lebens unmöglich zu machen. Der frühe Tod seiner ältesten Tochter Annie, zu der er eine besonders innige Beziehung hatte, hat Darwin völlig in eine Sinnkrise gestürzt, da er glaubt, durch seine Naturgesetzen zuwiderlaufende Heirat mit einer nahen Verwandten selbst daran schuld zu sein. Seine bisher harmonische Ehe mit Emma Darwin, geborene Wedgwood, scheint an dem tragischen Verlust und an der großen religiösen Kluft, die sich zwischen beiden auftut, zu zerbrechen. Nach Jahren des Wartens drängen seine wissenschaftlichen Freunde, Joseph Dalton Hooker und Thomas Huxley, Charles Darwin nun dazu, seine Forschungsergebnisse endlich in Buchform zu veröffentlichen - bevor ihm ein anderer Wissenschaftler, Alfred Russel Wallace, zuvorkommt. Doch damit das Werk zu Veröffentlichung gelangen kann, muss Darwin erst den Geist seiner Tochter vergessen und wieder ein vertrauteres Verhältnis zu seiner Frau gewinnen...Dieser Film hat mich unglaublich mitgenommen und am Ende richtig begeistert. Geschickt springt er zwischen mehreren Zeitebenen hin und her, die sich am Ende zu einem Ganzen verweben, und vermengt düstere Fantasieszenen mit exotischen und berührenden Erzählungen aus Darwins frühen Jahren (unglaublich rührend: die Geschichte des Äffchens Jenny!!). Die Schauspieler (Paul Bettany und Jennifer Connelly sind auch im wirklichen Leben ein Ehepaar) spielen überaus überzeugend. Darwins menschliche Seite ist faszinierend.Das Beeindruckende am ganzen Konzept des Filmes ist aber: Mit der viktorianischen Kontroverse zwischen religiöser Sinnstiftung und naturwissenschaftlichem Zweifel ist hier zugleich ein zeitloses Thema dargestellt worden. Das Ende des Films aber gibt - ohne zu viel verraten zu wollen - Hoffnung auf eine glückliche Synthese...

「進化論」で世界をひっくり返したチャールズ・ダーウィンの、苦悩に満ちた創作過程を追った物語。2009年の東京国際映画祭で上映された以外は日本では未公開のようです。ちなみにその時の邦題は「クリエイション　ダーウィンの幻想」。ランドル・ケインズ『ダーウィンと家族の絆（Annie's Box- Charles Darwin, His Daughter and Human Evolution)』が原作。ダーウィン：「進化論」の著者。…てな感じに、教科書なんかにさらっと書いてあるわけですが、それがこんな苦しい思いをして生み出されたものだとは、知りませんでした。まず彼はは進化論が「神を殺す」ことへの世間の反発を恐れました。（私もクリスチャンですが、進化論が常識となった現在でも教会では「神がすべてを創られた」というのが常識なので、当時の彼の恐れは察して余りあるものがあります。）そして敬虔なクリスチャンの妻とのあいだにできてゆく微妙な溝に悩み、夭逝した愛娘アニーへの追慕は尽きることがなく…これらのプレッシャーが高じて起きる神経症めいた発作（一説ではパニック障害とも）に苦しみ続けて…。そんなこんなで「進化論」を着想してから発表まで10年近くを要したとのこと。で、たぶんこの映画を見ようかどうしようかと思っている人の多くはベネディクト・カンバーバッチ氏めあてかと思うのですが（私がそうだから）、端的にいうと、彼はそんなにたくさんは出てきません。「全然足りないと十分じゃないの中間くらい」ってやつです（「つぐない」と同程度くらい…かな）。でも、演じてるJoseph Dalton Hookerはダーウィンが最も信頼した友人、科学者の一人ということで、重要な人物ではあります。のちにキューガーデン（今は世界遺産）の所長になる人で、植物学者としてヒマラヤとか南極とか、世界中を飛び回ってたくさんの本を書いています。映画をみる前に、このフッカー氏の肖像画（写真？）を見ておくと、ベネディクトを探さなくても、すぐわかります…って、この映画の当時は30代なのだから、おじいちゃんになってからの肖像のままの扮装をさせなくてもいいのに。。。うう。。笑える。。まあ、それはともかく、正直言って、たしかに興行的に成功するような「面白い」作品ではない気がするけれど、ダーウィンの軌跡を丁寧に追っていて彼に対する深い愛情が感じられます。また、動物の出てくるシーンなんかは質が高いと思います。さすがはBBCを擁する国です。あとは、標本、といっても要するに死体に囲まれてるわけなので多少気味の悪いシーンはあります。ドキュメンタリーとか、淡々と生活を追うタイプのドラマがお好みの方にはおすすめかも？ちなみに、英語字幕はついてます。パソコンで見れました（それ以外は特に試してない）。

Wunderbarer Film über die Familie Charles Darwins mit dem großartigen (tatsächlichen Ehepaar!) Paul Bettany mit Jennifer Connelly, niemand hätte das besser gemacht (!!!), der einen Einblick in die unmittelbaren Nöte des Mannes erlaubt, der "Gott getötet hat", so Thomas Huxley...Huxley hätte sagen sollen, er habe eine Illusion getötet, aber soweit war man in diesen Tagen noch nicht!Fest steht, dass nichts schwieriger ist als Illusionen zu töten, denn auf solche mag selbst der ach so aufgeklärte homo sapiens des 21. Jahrhunderts nie und nimmer verzichten, hat es den Anschein. Aber, es gibt Hoffnung. Die evidente Identität zwischen dem jüdischen Jahwe, der extraordinären Dreifaltigkeit der Christen und dem muslimischen Allah wird hoffentlich von immer mehr Gläubigen registriert und führt dann endlich zur dringend notwendigen Abrüstung der drei monotheistischen Religionen zum Wohle der ganzen Menschheit.Ohne diese Abrüstung wird es auch keine echte weltweite militärische Abrüstung geben ...mit den allseits bekannten Konsequenzen für unseren Planeten. Also, wir sind alles andere als "aus dem Schneider" und deshalb wünsche ich diesem Film eine Maximalverbreitung, weil er auf sehr eindringliche, sanfte Weise die Denkrichtung des Betrachters korrigieren kann!

Sehr ruhiger, interessanter Film. Der Konflikt zwischen Darwins Theorien und der gängigen Schöpfungslehre der Kirche wird gezeigt vor dem Hintergrund seiner Ehe, Darwins labiler Gesundheit und dem Tod seiner Lieblingstochter.Gut gemacht. Unaufgeregt, und daher sehr berührend.Nur für Freunde der englischen Sprache, da ohne deutschen Ton bzw Untertitel.
