This book struck a personal chord - of self-doubts that get amplified by messaging from all directions - you cannot do it, you are not smart enough, your unique set of skills is of no value, don't bother trying - the list goes on. Dhanya, really wants to please her parents, by doing better in school, but finds the lessons boring and not applicable to real life. The parent-teacher meetings are full of teachers telling Dhanya's parents that Dhanya must try harder and the parents are embarrassed by this feedback.Without giving away spoilers, Dhanya finds herself enrolled in a different kind of school, where the emphasis is on learning by doing. Here too, she falters. She loves animals and demonstrates that she has a unique set of skills that allow her to relate deeply to them. Once again, though recognized, the skills are dismissed as not being enough. Dhanya must find a way to learn the powerful mantras designed to remove obstacles in life. The teachers see something special in her, but Dhanya only hears the years of negativity and struggles to prove herself.The author does a wonderful job in the evolution of Dhanya into a girl who slowly starts to find her own groove, her own way of learning and making sense of seemingly jumbled words. She notices patterns and learns and starts seeing clues to a mystery that is worrying the whole school. This is a fun and intense read and readers will see themselves and others in the various characters. It ends in an explosion of tests that Dhanya must pass. It ends with me wanting more and hoping the next sequel comes out soon.
