The Story of Art: luxury Edition

Gombrich illustrates all works he references, which actually is both rare in this type of book, and essential. If you're interested in the subject but hate the pomposity usually associated with Art then its great.For Students: As textbooks go this is a pretty good start to any studies based around Art. It's been a recommended text since the 1960's and quite honestly is just as relevant in its 16th edition today. It is worth knowing Gombrich is noted for his study into Renaissance Art and History, and is criticised for his approach to modern art. That is, to be honest a minor comment to an otherwise great starting point for studies.Reading for interest: If you're interested in Art or even History in general then this is perfect too. The vast story of the visual arts holds such insight to cultures, traditions, ect. No prior knowledge needed, maybe you're looking for a book to dip in and out of, this is perfect for that too, easy sections with no real heavy reading required.I would highly recommend this book, intelligently thought through, although slim on modern Art.

I`ve chosen 5 star rating because I think this book is just great. I personally don`t know a lot about art. What is more important - It was hard to me to distinguish artists and understand, what is so good about them and their paintings.One should not overestimate this book and treat it like a pure truth about art. It is just a point of view of concrete author. I`m Russian and had lots of painters and only few of them mentioned in the book. But still - the book is great, very smart and interesing, written in good english.

its great for an all around information

I'm pleased to have this smaller and more portable edition to enjoy and learn from alongside its larger brother, but the binding of my copy was poorly done, and the outer cover came away from the spine almost immediately. Fortunately, working in a library I was able to repair it, but useful though this book is, it isn't terribly robust, and I suspect, in a 'pocket' edition, robustness and durability are the qualities one would look for.

One of the best books about art ever written. It's a book that gives so many interesting points of view that everyone, even if not directly a student of art, should read it.

As good as when I first read it over 20 years ago.

The writer does really well in taking the reader on a journey through art. He makes reference to the numbered illustrations, some of which are missing in the kindle version. A proper kindle file with all the images would be greatly appreciated.

Wonderful book in a very convenient paperback edition. I use mine regularly and gave this one as a present.

Il libro è veramente ben fatto, le immagini sono perfette. Pensavo che le dimensioni ridotte influenzassero negativamente la lettura, invece è piuttosto maneggevole.

Es un libro muy bello, muy bien editado, y de una gran calidad, es ridículo que con este nivel de calidad el precio sea tan bajo.
