Stunning Projects Inside
This book was bought as a gift for my Father who is really into scrollsaw work. He loves it. He says the instructions are easy to follow. There are many projects, and I was impressed with how intricate some of them look without being overly complicated. So far he's made 3 boxes and they are beautiful.

Do they come any better than this??
Carol Rothman's "Creative Wooden Boxes from the Scroll Saw" sets a new benchmark that will be difficult for other woodworking author's to match. While the technical aspects of her latest book are of the highest caliber, including beautiful photographs and a visually appealing layout, the book excels in two additional parameters:1. Creativity and Uniqueness of the Projects. Rothman's imagination and creativity are unmatched in the world of scroll saw boxes. Her wooden bows and ribbons are exquisite. The boxes are unique. Her work is captivating. Many of the pieces are of studio quality and could easily be selected for display in a gallery. With 28 different projects presented, there is a wide range of appeal among the boxes.2. Clarity of the projects' instructions. Rothman's former career as an academician clearly contributed to her transformation as an author of instructional books. She is masterful at analyzing each project, breaking the steps down into clearly written instructions, and ordering the steps in the proper sequence. Even the novice scrollsawer will be able to experience success after following her tutorials. One would be hard pressed to find a more appealing, better written "how to" scroll saw book. They just don't come any better than Carole Rothman's "Creative Wooden Boxes from the Scroll Saw".

Super Fun Plans and Easy to Follow!
I found out about Carole's book on a woodworking blog and added it to my wishlist. Since nobody bought it for me for Christmas, I bought it for myself :)!! I saw some of Carole's youtube videos on making the super cute boxes already so I decided to try them myself. I had a perfect opportunity to give the cupcake boxes to my daugther's preschool teachers. It took me a few hours to make 3 of them and her instructions are super clear. If you want a creative spin on making functional gifts, give this book a try. Each project has the respective patterns drawn out so you can copy/scan and print. Also, there is a list of all the scroll saw blades and tools you'll need to accomplish it. This was my very first scroll saw project and that list made it super simple for me. Clear instructions, super fun to make. Highly recommend!! I can't wait to check out Carole's Wooden Bowls book (never was into turning, but using a scrollsaw, I will definitely give that a try)!

Great book if you have unlimited tools and budget
The rating I provided is based on the fact that this book is not suitable for beginners and/or for those who have a basic workshop. I can only assume that the people who give this book glowing reviews are those who have an extremely well equipped workshop with a band saw capable of re sawing boards, an inflatable round sander, a hook-and-loop sander, a small drum sander, a vertical belt sander, a multitude of scroll saw blades, and various other tools. Even if I had all of the tools necessary to make the boxes, I would still have a problem with the wood necessary for even the simple boxes. For example, one of the boxes requires a piece of cherry 6 1/2" by 3 1/2" by 1 1/8". Two questions: 1. Where do you get wood with those dimensions? 2. How much would a piece of cherry with those dimensions cost? Even if you could re saw your own wood, a piece of cherry with those dimensions or bigger would immediately bust my budget and make the little box extremely expensive. Regarding the wood selections mentioned in the book, the author suggests using veneer instead of real wood because veneer is much cheaper. I guess it's relative, because a 24" by 32" piece of cherry veneer from Rockler would cost me $25.00. I do agree that the book is beautifully illustrated, and has detailed instructions. If I had all of the tools necessary to make the boxes, and had an unlimited budget to buy the wood for the boxes I would rate the book as 5 stars.

Valuable Resource for Scroll Saw Owners
Having recently purchased a high end scroll saw to replace the Dremel version I owned many years ago, I was looking for good reference works for projects. This book, and the companion book by the same author on making wooden bowls on the scroll saw are well organized, informative and fairly easy to follow. The author does not make light of the fact that there is a big, big difference in technique, effort and assembly between lathe work and scroll saw work, and her instructions are sufficient to the task of completing these little works of art/ craft.

Fantastic book!
Ms.Rothman really delivers in this book. The box plans are very well explained, the boxes are very creative, and you can also get lots of ideas for making your own boxes. Although there were some limitations for me, due to a lack of the required tools and materials, I was still able to make boxes by improvising. She adds great detail to each project and you can copy or scan the plans provided. Every box project is detailed step by step and she also lists all the materials you will need for each one.Overall i think this is a great book and one I will be using frequently.

Excellent book with great projects.
Excellent book. Many interesting and different patterns. Author provides plans for main box and sub assemblies (eg ribbons, tails, etc), clear instructions and lots of pictures illustrating how to build the boxes. I have met the author at Woodworking shows. She builds every project and makes sure that the project can be built using her instructions. I.e. no hidden gotchas where an author forgets to tell you how to do some necessary step and you wind up frustrated with a ruined project. I built the oval ribbon box. It was easy to build and looks fantastic.People are amazed that it is all wood. I will be building other boxes for friends and family.

Creative Wooden Boxes From The scrollsaw
This is the second book by Carole, the first being Wooden Bowls From The Scrollsaw. When I heard she was doing another book after the first I anxiously waited for it to appear to see her new ideas.I was wondering at time what else could possibly be done to top her bowls. She didn't let me down with what she has created in this book.I would recommend it as a companion to her first as it allows a person to stretch their skills. She has another book in the works. What could possibly top her first two?If you are a novice or seasoned scrollsawer I think you will enjoy this book as I did. There is something there for all levels of expertise.
