Hold Me Tight

Something different
This is not a film to entertain you, since it is really nothing more than a psychological profile of a young mother who cannot seem to reconcile her own personal conflict between the love she has for her family and her need for personal freedom.I daresay this is not particularly rare, although few mothers probably follow the pattern of this film. We do not know what has caused this state of mind, which one would usually expect to end up in the hands of a therapist. Although the protagonist is very much on the move , driving through France after stealing away from her 2 children very early in the morning, this it in no way a road movie. Vicky Krieps is extremely convincing in showing her inner feelings as they alternate between between moments of extreme anxiety and great happiness: the former for having abandoned her family and the latter when thinking of the love she has for them.It is not an easy film to watch, as the scenes alternate between the tormented mother on the move, and the rather disorganised father trying to look after the children in the family home. There is no plot, as such, just a constant observation from close up of the mother as she moves from place to place, and from time to time acting as though total strangers were members of her family, who look askance at her peculiar behaviour. with the children, naturally, becoming the victims of their wayward mother. It is rather relentless, but nevertheless very effective as a psychological study. Certainly not a popcorn movie.
