I am not a wood expert, but my guess is that it is made of pine. The wood is not a very hard wood; but it is aesthetically suitable to use at the entrance of my formal parlor and billiard rooms. I have found that the fence serves the purpose I needed it for. I needed the fence to deter my small dog from entering a room. The fence may not be strong enough to prevent a large dog from knocking it down, or an active child from knocking the fence down, but it is serves to create a barrier and that is the job I needed this fence to do.

Q: Does this gate really extend to 5ft. or 60 inches?

Yes, but I agree with the first answer. It will not even hold a cat in. We wanted it for an outside porch so we took feet off & anchored it to top stair posts. Even after cutting legs down a bit our cat could still push through so we put a board outside to block flexibility of gate. I guess it's worth $17.00 but is really more decorative than functional.
