On the Abolition of All Political Parties (NYRB Classics)

A wise and very relevant book!
Simone Weil has great wisdom for the current political situation, and this text is an excellent one to read along with her book The Need for Roots. The essay by the poet Czeslaw Milosz is also excellent as well as the other essay included on Weil and Camus, which give a glimpse into Weil's character. Highly recommended for philosophers or anyone interested in politics and ethics!

Written in 1943; desperately needed in 2023
Possibly the most sobering thing I’ve ever read. Everyone should read this—and it shouldn’t be so difficult to get (i.e. “Prime” it)

Four stars
"1. A political party is a machine to generate collective passions.2. A political party is an organization designed to exert collective pressure upon the minds of all its members.3. The first objective and also the ultimate goal of any political party is its own growth, without limit."

Short but to the point
I read the book because a friend wishes to abolish parties, as evil. I thought this might help me understand his view and help him articulate it better. One of his examples is going to a restaurant and being offered the menu twice. Plus, the idea one supports the party and not America. It met the purpose well. And more. Thanks

Simone is so classic I love her books. This was in excellent shape.

Excellent
A quick read that deserves the attention Simone Weil advocates as the approach to both education and prayer. The reviews included in the volume provide context.

In tune with today
With the world facing a crisis of leadership (a few notable exceptions being in Africa), and even President Obama at the mercy of "political parties" the extraordinary M/S Weil has come of age! Political parties, organized religion and even corporations get "too big for their boots" and far away from their constituents. The fall of Communism demonstrates that a lack of democracy provides the "seed" for any entity's "destruction."

Quick review of Simone Weil on Political Parties
An excellent and well-thought-out commentary on liberal democratic politics when divorced from ethics, morality and value systems. Written 70 years ago and still extremely relevant. A very worthwhile read!!!

Excellent translation, presentation
Weil was an idiosyncratic genius; I like reading her for the odd, interesting view of the world. Ley’s translation reads very well and the Milosz essay at the end is extraordinarily good.

A must read before then General Election!
One of the most reasonable and thought provoking books I have read in ages. Written 70 years ago, it it absolutely up-to-date and very much to the point as we near the election.
