TROPICA - South American Canna (Canna speciosa) - 15 SeedsWorth knowing: The slender, perennial and rhizome developing flower pipe was introduced to England from South America around 1820. The leaves of this about 1,20 metre tall shrub grow alternate. The wonderful flowers are two-coloured, with red petals and yellow throat. This variety surely is one of the most beautiful of almost 40 species. The seed capsules are so hard, it is assumed that they can be kept for up to hundred years. Planting depth: Pond edges/marsh zone in 5 to 10 cm. Origin: The Canna speciosa is indigenous to Tropical South America. There, it grows in sunny positions near the marshland. Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. These seeds are from natural cultivation. The hard shell should be roughen with sand paper to make the seed pellets more permeable. Sprinkle the seeds on well moistened cultivation soil, cover thinly and keep evenly moist. At 20°-25°C, the seeds will germinate after 3-4 weeks. The Canna loves warm, wind-protected and sunny locations. These marsh plants require a lot of water during summer.Care: Supply the plants with fertilizer every 7-10 days from mid-May until end of September. Very rich flowering is achieved by cutting back the first flowering shoots down to a height of 20 cm. Cut out withered flowering parts on a regular basis.Winter period: Although this is a strong plant, it is nonetheless sensitive to cold temperatures and not hardy. After the first light frosts, the stems will turn brown and can be cut down to about 20 cm above soil surface. Being a rhizome developing plant, these can now be dug out and spend the winter in earth-moist soil protected from frost. A cellar, shed or greenhouse is ideal. There, the temperature should not be warmer than 15°C.
