Q: Will this lens work with the canon eos 40d?

Yes, the EF 70-300mm f4/-5.6L IS is compatible with the EOS 40d. You may want to make sure the firmware on your camera body is current: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html You may also want to consider upgrading to a newer body. Currently, good used EOS 60d are very affordable and offer an 18M sensor, as well as faster ASA speeds without grain than are available on the 40d. This will matter with a long telephoto like the 70-300. Of course you can go to the 70 or just released 80d, but at significantly greater cost.

Q: Is this better than the 70-300 IS NON-L lens? I am thinking of upgrading but do not know it it is worth it or if I should just get a 400mm prime.

I dont have the 70-300 NON-L but have used the 55-250 USM II that cam in my kit a lot before I bought this lens. This lens is NIGHT AND DAY better than the kit lens> It is bigger, and heavier, but is no question the BEST quality and if you take care of it will probably last forever. The AF is just CRAZY fast, at first i wasnt sure if my AF was working right because it was focus locking instantly. I have notice MUCH better colour, contrast, sharpness and detail. Even though it has the same max app. of 5.6, I have notice that is appears that the lens is able to capture much more light. In the same lighting, using the same settings this lens seems capable of shutter speeds MUCH higher. For instance, my kit lens would be getting 1/100 at f8 ISO 400 and this lens would be 1/500 or better! Im no pro, or rocket scientist to explain why. Maybe its the larger elements and better glass. I like the versatility of the zoom, great as a walk around lens and some wildlife and birds. It WORKS with the Kenko Pro300 1.4x TC for a 420mm max zoom. If you are serious (not just a casual shooter) and can afford it, you wont regret buying this lens.

Yes, it will work very well. The IS gives you 3 to 4 f stop advantage, so hand holding isn't difficult. Canon has the IS in the lenses, not the camera. The advantage is that each lens can have an IS that is "fine tuned" for that lens. The disadvantage is that you have to pay for the IS for each lens with it vs. only once in the camera. Although I believe you get what you pay for and that an L lens is a lifetime investment, you may want to look at the 75-300 IS USM. It is considerably less expensive, smaller and lighter. It does not have the sharpness, color saturation, lack of distortion or contrast of it's bigger brother, but is a good lens in it's own right. I would not purchase a lens for a single occasion. I don't know what camera you have. Photography involves problem solving and before making any equipment purchase you should be able to understand what you are trying to do and how to best do it on your budget. I can tell that this is a great lens and I like it for its compact size and overall quality. I use it with the Canon 5DMIII. I have used it for indoor and outdoor situations. I suggest reading about this lens and others at The Digital Picture. The difference in performance between lenses can be striking and can sometimes make all of the difference. Today's latest cameras offer great shots with 800ISO or higher making an F4 lens quite acceptable. However, "low light" can mean so many things that you should understand what you are purchasing. An avid photographer will purchase several or more lenses over a long time and each of those will or should out last any one camera.
