![Dunkirk [DVD] [2017]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51YKDeh80kL.jpg)

Directed by Leslie Norman (The Long, The Short And The Tall), starring John Mills (Ice Cold In Alex, Goodbye Mr Chips, Great Expectations) Richard Attenborough (Brighton Rock, The Great Escape) and a cast featuring actual army officers, DUNKIRK is one of the most authentic representations of conflict during World War II.DUNKIRK follows the dramatic events leading up to Operation Dynamo, where upon the British Army attempted to rescue fellow soldiers and Allied troops from Nazi occupied France. Seen from the dual perspectives of a jaded journalist in search of propaganda and a weary soldier desperately trying to give his troop some hope, DUNKIRK never shies away from the brutality of war and the bravery of its soldiers. Review: The Ultimate Dunkirk Film - This is the ultimate Dunkirk film that is because of the real solders that were included in the scenes and also because of the acting talent which described the politics of this event and the very realistic scenes of the rescue. The 2017 film was good in its own way however it lacked authority as it seemed to be lacking numbers on the beaches, in the air and on the sea and of course there is no way round it; the actors in this film are no match for the likes of John Mills, Richard Attenborough, Bernard Lee and all of the great British character actors of the time. Review: The whole story - This is the real story of Dunkirk, of how and why the Army came to be there, and what it took to evacuate them. The new film has good scenes but there is nothing to explain why everyone is on the beaches.

The Ultimate Dunkirk Film
This is the ultimate Dunkirk film that is because of the real solders that were included in the scenes and also because of the acting talent which described the politics of this event and the very realistic scenes of the rescue. The whole story
This is the real story of Dunkirk, of how and why the Army came to be there, and what it took to evacuate them. The new film has good scenes but there is nothing to explain why everyone is on the beaches.

Good
A classic and very much of its era. Its a slightly divorced view of the War not having the gruesome reality of current films though it does cover the events that occurred. This can be seen as the censorship of the period however after listening to a story about the creation of Dad's Army and the failed suggestion to use real war film in the opening sequences because it opened too many recent horrific memories, you can understand the slightly heroic and anodyne approach of the film. Its worth a view.

Vinbtage War Film.
Great film of the of the old sort: much better than the modern rubbish that they tend to churn out. It has a good plot, and great acting: you can tell that those who wrote, wrought, directed and show-played in this film knew what they were talking about, and that they had indeed experienced the war, and what it involved, for themselves.

An excellent conveyance of the Dunkirk operation.
This version of the film made in 1958 more than met my expectations. I first saw it when I was 12 years old and I lived in Ramsgate, which was the assembly point for the Little Ships. I remember seeing the London Fireboat Massey Shaw in the harbour. I have just seen the new film of Dunkirk but in no way does it convey the essence of the whole operation! The 1958 version shows the Little Ships being requisitioned along the South Coast and along the River Thames, registering at Sheerness and leaving from Ramsgate. The beaches at Dunkirk were filled with soldiers, not so the new version. Being made in 1958 there were still many of the original wartime Naval ships to use. I did enjoy the aerial filming of the Spitfires very much but other than that the new film falls very short of conveying the incredible feat of saving the soldiers - in fact most of our Army - from Dunkirk. I would strongly recommend anyone to watch this version of the Dunkirk story rather than the new film.

The Best telling of Dunkirk.
This in British movie making of the period at its very best. There is a quality in this film that gives a quintessential truth to the events of the time and the nature of British Servicemen and Civilians. Later versions of this true story may have better production values and better special effects, plus more pace and action, but for all that they fail to do what this original manages.

Victory snatched from Disaster!
Takes a rather reserved and reverent look at the dramatic events leading up to Operation Dynamo when the Army attempted to rescue allied troops from the beaches at Dunkirk. Strong direction, a good script and excellent interpretation of their roles makes for a very engaging film.

Film fabuleux de par sa simplicité authentique: On oublie qu'on regarde un film, se sentant vraiment sur place... Il fait honte à ses successeurs en couleur avec leurs explosions à l'essence, jurons et autres vulgarités machos transatlantiques...

In our humble opinion (my wife and I) this version of Dunkirk is much, much, much better than the more recent movie by the same name. Made in 1958, this rendition is a bit more reverent and reserved than the new Dunkirk, but that said, this older movie has much more of a soul and a much better scope of Operation Dynamo, than does the new movie. We must say that the older version is head and shoulders better in every way than the new movie. We recommend this version highly. Well done!
