Warrior Women: An Archaeologist's Search for History's Hidden Heroines

I've learned so much from this book! Jeanine wrote it with an non-bias opinion and simply told us what she found and her opinion of what was in the graves she found and some were women warriors, some were not. Those that were, she gave a distinct description of what she found as an archaeologist that others before her had not seen with their jaded opinions as old christian men. When you take a new look at history with an open mind and clean slate, You get better, more accurate answers that way, I believe. Thank you, Jeanine Davis-Kimball, for doing that. Maybe next time you write a book, though, please indicate a little bit better when you're talking about your actual trips and the history itself. That's my only complaint, otherwise, this book is amazing and so informative that nothing else comes close, especially when you take into consideration that she's re-built her life from scratch after 50 years old and after having raised her family. She's an amazing woman, writing about amazing women, so how can you not want to read this book?

Jeannine Davis-Kimball tells us about her adventures in exploring women's roles in ancient Eurasia through archaeological sites, Greek and Roman legends and how the people of the steppe tribes live now. She moves across the land with the speed of thought, from the mummies of China to the warrior queens of Erie. Woman were nurturers, warriors and leaders (and still are in Mongolia) sharing both power and responsible within the tribes. I think the best part about the book is not only showing that women were sometimes in charge but that men within these societies were also nurturers and shared with the daily chores. Maybe both men and women were just too busy with life to worry about sexism and gender issues. Maybe sexism is a byproduct of progress?The book covers alot but doesn't get bogged with too much detail. Very much up-to-date information. I don't think I agree with one or two points but it's an enjoyable book to read.

Warrior Women in a Fierce WorldWarrior Women by Jeannine Davis-Kimball, Ph.D. explores the elements of parts of history that today's society left behind. The strong and powerful women who shaped our world but not our text books. The women who could have held their own with men and not back down. For this reason if not the spectacular imagery or wild adventures that flow from Davis’s pen alone should make you and any young women aspiring for great things to read it as well. I treasure the knowledge in the book but this is not why it's one of my favorites it is the message that anyone young woman can find their place in this big vast world. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt they were insignificant or unimportant. For the little girls who have ever been told they couldn't do something or the older women who have been told they are past their prime. This book however is not only to empower young women but also to show young men how damaging a narrow mind can be to the larger pictures. That they can be forces for change and demand that women not be left out of history or constantly be overlooked. That is why I recommend this book for the way it shows how important we are to the story of this world and leaving anything out would be a mistake. This is why I found this book incredibly interesting as well as informative. Davis paints the most magically pictures of the centers of her studies which sound almost stranger than fiction. For anyone looking for an adventure, an inspiration, a vast vault of knowledge or a combination of the three I highly recommend Warrior Women By Jeannie Kimball Davis.

Janine Davis-Kimball has written a wonderful book that takes you into many different cultures and explores exceptional women with warrior backgrounds from ancient cultures. She relies heavily on archaeology and from her own personal cultural experiences in these places. A delight to read and she is an archaeologists to boot so the work is enticing and full of facts. I recommend this book to anyone who likes archaeology, history, warrior societies, ancient warfare and weapons, and exceptional historical women. A must read!!!!!!!

This was an interesting book. I purchased it after seeing the PBS special. It is easy reading and informative but, I do think that much of the interpretation of the physical remains is just conjecture. The pictures were well done and the short histories attached to the chapters were very informative.

Ich fand die Ausgrabungen Davis-Kimballs auf der Suche nach "shield maiden" im Internet. Das Buch liefert zwar umfangreiche Beschreibungen der Ausgrabungen, ist aber eher eine autobiographische Erzählung als eine wissenschaftliche Abhandlung, daher nur vier Punkte. Vieles wird nur andiskutiert, nicht in Tabellen aufbereitet und nicht in wissenschaftliche Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Andererseits bekommt hier das normale Publikum die Kriegerinnen zu Gesicht, die die Griechen als Amazonen beschrieben haben. Auch identifiziert Davis-Kimball den "Issyk gold man" anhand von vergleichenden Studien als eine "Issyk warrior-priestess".Wichtig an ihren Entdeckungen ist die Erkenntnis, dass Waffen in einem Grab nicht bedeuten, dass ein Mann in diesem Grab liegt, was viele Archäologen bisher automatisch annahmen, sondern dass das Skelett zu untersuchen ist, um zu entscheiden, ob es sich um eine Frau oder einen Mann gehandelt hat. Erst dadurch konnte Davis-Kimball anhand der Ausgrabungen in Prokovka feststellen (182 Skelette konnten hinsichtlich Alter und Geschlecht zugeordnet werden), dass viele Sauro-Sarmatische Gräber Frauen enthalten, die als Kriegerin (15 %, identifiziert durch Waffen, speziell Pfeilspitzen, Schwert, Speerspitze) oder als Krieger-Priesterin (3 %, identifiziert durch Altar, Seemuschel-Schale und Spiegel sowie Waffen) begraben wurden. Die restlichen weiblichen Toten setzen sich zusammen aus 7 % Priesterinnen (identifiziert durch Altar, Seemuschel-Schale und Spiegel) und 75 % Herd-Frauen (ausschließlich Spinn-Wirtel aus Ton, Ohrringe und Perlen). Dagegen wurden 94 % aller Männer mit Waffen begraben und keiner als Priester. Die meisten der Kriegerinnen starben bereits bevor sie zwanzig waren, was Davis-Kimball vermuten lässt, dass viele Frauen mit der ersten Schwangerschaft die Zeit als Kriegerin hinter sich ließen und den Status der Herd-Frau ("hearth woman category") annahmen. Wegen dieser vielen neuen Informationen gebe ich trotz der kaum wissenschaftlich aufbereiteten Erzählung vier Sterne.Als eine autobiographische Erzählung ist dieses Buch eine wirklich spannende Darstellung einer Wissenschaftlerin, die niemals ausgetretenen Pfaden gefolgt ist. Auch wird uns hier die Eurasische Nomaden-Kultur sehr gut nahe gebracht, so dass wir den Einfluss dieser Kulturen auch auf die europäische Geschichte besser erkennen können. Völlig neu waren für mich ausserdem z.B. die ca. 2500 Jahre alten keltisch anmutenden Mumien kaukasischer Menschen in China (Chachar, Taklamakan-Wüste).Das Buch enthält viele Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos, eine Reihe von Karten, ein Glossar, eine Bibliografie (so dass man sich tiefergehender informieren kann) und einen Index.Fazit: ein spannendes Buch mit vielen anregenden Erkenntnissen.
