TUBA SKINNY AND SHAYE COHN

Love this music. Have to admit I never heard the original music, say in the 1920's. (Note however, there are piano roll recordings of Scott Joplin playing his music from 1910 and later - now remastered on to CD's.) As far as I could tell, recordings of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band was as good a sense of that music as we could get. But those musicians began to retire as they got older. I thought the music would be lost. This book informs us that the music is not lost. One of the best current examples is a band of young people called Tuba Skinny led by a very accomplished young woman named Shaye Cohen. You can hear their work on YouTube and/or buy their CD's from their website. THE ORIGINAL SPIRIT IS THERE!!! I don't know how they know it but they've captured it.

This is a self-published, single-edition fanzine, typeset with an unsophisticated word processor, and printed on demand. But if you love the best trad-jazz band in the world, and want to get really deep into the band, its' history, and approach to arranging and performing, this is a must have. The book is full of insights into how the composers and performers stray beyond the norms of most musical genres to make the performances exciting and entrancing. While you're at it, buy some CDs.

Total waste of money. I was expecting a book about Sasha Cohn what I got was excruciating detail about everything but. What the cones were made of different keys music catalogue and history

This is a top notch history of an unparalleled traditional jazz band written by a very knowledgeable musicologist {whether the author calls himself a musicologist I cannot say). Anyone interested in Tuba Skinny in particular or traditional jazz in general will find this book to be informative and interesting. Highly recommended.

Coffee Pops does a nice job of telling about the group "Skinny Tuba," from its origin to its success of today. If you enjoy listening to their music on YouTube then you will enjoy reading about them in this book.

I have followed this band on YouTube for quite a while but it was difficult to find out any details about the group. This author has done a great job of interviewing band members and analyzing their music. He has included links to various YouTube channels to give examples. I am really glad that I bought this book.

References in the book for You Tube videos by the Tuba Skinny band. Insight on the band development, history of the band, and background of the players. I am so impressed with the musical talent of this band.

This is an excellent description of a group of professional and very talented musicians that form probably the best New Orleans Blues ensemble in the world leaded by the great Shaye Cohn. Hands down!

Excellent book

Interested in the band Tuba Skinny, fronted by cornet player Shay Cohn and also an admirer of her cornet playing.The book is part a very enthusiastic review of the band and its personnel and part detailed analysis of the musical techniques used in the material presented on YouTube and compared to older recordings and origins of the many New Orleans songs and tunes performed by the band. It is quite technical and somewhat repetitive in places.I am an old devotee of New Orleans Jazz and played in bands over the years. I found the book fascinating, because of the author’s knowledge of the subject.

Fabulous and very interesting book. Tuba Skinny are probably currently the best traditional jazz band in the world. But they are modest with it and still busk the streets in the French Quarter of New Orleans. This book contains a wealth of information about the members of the band (especially the leader Sheye Cohn) and details of hundreds of songs and tunes they have recorded.
