Why is it so (very) hard to push a standard uk toothbrush plug into this (the revised version) thing. have i got a duff one or is that normal?

There has to be a certain amount of force used as the shutter mechanism is a safety feature. If it was too slack it would be open to abuse from numpties or children sticking anything into the ports and getting electricuted. But to be honest these things are for shavers only (as it says on the front "Shavers Only") on short usage, it's not really for toothbrush chargers as the socket can give out higher than normal voltage, which is perfectly fine in normal usage if your using it for a 5 minute shave but not for hours of charging a tooth brush, it can damage both the socket or the charger/toothbrush.

To the Sellar: Does this model allow toothbrushes to be charged?

It is designed to power shavers and charge toothbrushes, but unfortunately there is a significant transformer hum. If your bathroom is close by you may find that the hum is unacceptable overnight. Whilst I can accept that the unit is electrically safe, MK should address the transformer hum issue before describing it as suitable for charging toothbrushes as these will normally be left on charge overnight whereas a shaver will usually only be powered when in use.
