Enjoyable final season of a unique series
Irwin Allen's "Lost in Space" was a one-of-a-kind series, in the extent to which it ranged from hard science fiction (in Season 1) to outright fantasy (in Season 2). The third and final season represented the middle ground between these styles, and is my favourite. The new theme music by "Johnny" Williams (as he was then known) is a great improvement on its predecessors. Another plus for this season was the better representation of the whole cast, unlike Season 2's often excessive focus on the triumvirate of Dr Smith, Will and the Robot. So here you will find serious, thoughtful science fiction in episodes such as "The Antimatter Man" and "Flight into the Future". There's also witty, droll comedy in episodes such as "A Day at the Zoo", "Fugitives in Space", and "The Promised Planet" (the last being a fascinating look at the late Sixties "counter-culture" from the point of view of a programme made at the time). It must also be admitted that there are also a few episodes that are definitely best forgotten, but these are a minority. So, who should buy this box? If you've never seen this series, "Star Trek" it isn't (Gene Roddenberry did not consider the two programmes were in the same category), but it doesn't have to be. If you watch with an open mind about what TV of the period was like, you may find much to be entertained by. And if you do have fond memories of the series, this set will not only provide a trip down memory lane but should increase your admiration for the inventiveness on show in the best episodes. The few extras (on the last disc) include interviews with Bill Mumy and Jonathan Harris. One star deducted for the less than stellar production quality - the picture is no more than adequate, and the sound is sometimes very noticeably muffled. Clearly, no remastering of any kind has been done.Anyway, the bottom line is that they really don't make programmes like this any more.

Spare Me The Barbs Major!
I always loved the Lost In Space series especially the lady guest stars who were all so gorgeous and otherworldly! I wasn't even born when they first aired but have grown to appreciate them as a unique moment in sci fi history that predates Star Trek. I have Series 2 so couldn't resist Series 3 which is always good for a giggle especially in the winter months when it really lifts the spirits. LIS can be enjoyed by all as there are some strong lessons in morals and ethics in most episodes and will appeal to anyone with an imagination or just old nostalgics. Of course Dr Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) is as eloquent, humorous and reliably useless as ever. Vintage humour with traditional male and female roles from an era long gone but not forgotten! Oh and a special nod to Guy Williams who was such an icon.

Great series marred by tatty source transfer
'Lost In Space' returned for a third series with new opening titles, and with Dr Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) seemingly granted a licence to do his passive/aggressive bleating routine at every opportunity, which grates when episodes are viewed in succession. Notwithstanding, LIS Season 3 has some of LIS's most memorable episodes - and also some of its silliest. By this point LIS transformed from early-evening family viewing to what as basically juvenile fare. Plot points and scenarios recur throughout the series, and despite the humour LIS is capable of mustering-up some quite scarey moments. The cast play with conviction, though there is negligable character development. Aficionados will probably need no urging to buy, but for anyone unfamiliar with LIS, I'd recommend starting with Season 2. Partly, this is due to the much-mentioned issue of the picture quality of this DVD issue. It is definitely awry - just compare it to the excellent quality evident in Season 2, as well as the fact that similar complaints have been raised for the LIS Season 3 Region 1 release on Amazon.com.A bad telecine transfer has been suggested, but I don't think that this is the cause of the faultiness. It looks like the DVDs have been cut from retrograde video copies of each episode, rather than mastered afresh from the original 35mm film copies. Curiously, I recall LIS fans voicing similar observations about picture quality when the complete LIS was broadcast on Channel 4 TV in the late 1980s: the difference in clarity and colour between the last episode of Season 2 and the first of Season 3 the following week, was marked. Presumably there's no question that the original films still exist; just 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment being too cheap to fund new transfers, or too unprofessional to bother. Another vintage classic poorly served by its DVD publishers? That, unhappily, does compute.

Vintage Lost In Space
I approached this DVD set with some trepidation given the reviews which criticise the image quality. Well, the quality is not as good as season 2 but it is perfectly acceptable and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the DVD's.If season 1 could be described as semi-serious SF and season 2 as silly ('the space vikings' and 'the questing beast') then season 3 can only be described as very silly. The penultimate episode features a planet of sentient plants run by a giant carrot. The season features of course the usual camp comedy of Dr Smith, the robot and Will. However, unlike season 2, other members of the cast do get a look in. The extras are good too, with interviews with Bill Mumy and Jonathan Harris. If you are a Lost In Space fan then this is a fantastic DVD set to watch and enjoy.

... have no problem with the service and it arriving fine but as someone else has mentioned
I have no problem with the service and it arriving fine but as someone else has mentioned, there is something very wrong with the transfer. It'd not that it's soft so much as it has more like a side blur to the picture. Quite unpleasant to watch. Slightly soft I could have lived with but it's almost like slight double vision but only slight. Enough to detract from the show. So pretty disappointed. I bought season 3 because I wanted to see how it all ended. I can't remember if I ever saw the end when I was a kid in the 60's.

Lost in Space Complete Season 3-Region 2
LOST IN SPACE was a silly series. Of that there can be no doubt. It was, however, quite fun. Jonathan Harris, playing Dr. Zachary Smith, stole the show as a cowardly, greedy, lazy and incompetent stow away. He was always causing problems and good for a few laughs. The series changed over the course of 3 seasons. It started out as a fairly serious science fiction series. By the second season, it had become nothing more than a campy comedy. The third season saw a reversion back towards the serious end of the spectrum but only just barely. The plots were, by a large, a bit more believeable but there was no doubt that this was as much comedy as drama. The cast did not take themselves too seriously and that contributed to the fun.The series was noted for laughable costumes and special effects which used a bang, flash of smoke and disappearance/reappearance to solve any effects situation. What the series lacked in seriousness, costume, plot, and effects, it made up for with good humor and some of the richest color to appear on television at that time. It comes through well on the DVDs.
