Very interesting, honest - a cut above the other celebrity autobigraphies
I started with the ebook, but then also got the physical book, and then the audiobook, which Geddy narrates himself. Each item was not cheap, but worth it. This was such an interesting read, and am glad he added a large section on his parents. This is a classy book. Geddy has a great sense of humor, yet can be candid and serious. I highly recommend this. Oh, and in the physical book, there are a lot of pictures that are not as easily seen in the ebook. If you could only get one of the three formats, I would recommend audiobook. Geddy is an awesome narrator!!!

A thoughtful and complex but utterly approachable autobiography
While “thoughtful and complex but utterly approachable” can be used to describe Geddy Lee’s imaginative, durable and widely under appreciated band, it also aptly describes his autobiography.I do not generally read autobiographies. They’re a tough medium to love, as they often feel hard to start, self indulgent or self pitying or so deep in the weeds as to lose the reader. Not this one. My Effen Life is at times funny and sad, but always interesting and never off key (very on-brand for Geddy Lee). It is a tale extremely well told. The author manages to weave together stories of his lonely and marginalized childhood in an ethnic Jewish enclave on the fringes of the city, son of Holocaust survivors with a raucous rise to fame in rock and roll’s mad early heyday, with the challenges of stardom and persistence. Into this narrative he tells the harrowing story of his families long and painful ordeals during the European genocide, which shaped his parents’ worldview, and ultimately his own. There is much for a Rush fan to love in this book. It goes into great detail on the construction of their music, the motivations, drivers and musical tensions involved in every evolution of their music. It delves into technical details about their instruments, studios, stage kit, and light show. In an engaging way, Lee shares the intimate bond between himself, Lifeson and Peart—in the studio, on stage, and on the road, through their many ups and downs. He also introduces you to crew members, friends and family—highlighting their important to the band’s success. It tells a story of a talented, hard working if a bit nerdy and ethereal band who believed in themselves and believed in their fans, which explains the huge almost “underground” fan base that still persists. It’s a story of a life still in progress, punctuated by incredible triumphs and unimaginable losses. It is an easy book to read not just because it’s interesting but also because it’s well crafted. There is much for a non-Rush fan to love in this book, too.Though Rush is no more, I suspect most readers will come away expecting more to come…someday …from its bassist/singer/resident bossypants.BTW, read the footnotes. Lee shares awesome nuggets in these stage asides

Geddy Lee: An incredible raconteur!
I didn't know what to expect but I was overwhelmed by the overall quality of his book. This man writes beautifully and with a great an acute sense of humour. This is a fascinating account of a certainly not ordinary life. Geddy Lee is great lover of Canada and Quebec. And it shows all throughout the book. This is a most read for anybody's looking to get a better grasp of the musical scene of the last 50 years and most particularly the Canadian one. Thank you for your services Mr. Lee you make us all very proud.

An excellent read, essential for Rush fans
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and did it over a couple of days, I struggled to put it down once I’d started. I would say it’s one for the big Rush fans rather than a casual listener, mainly because he hasn’t done an awful lot outside of Rush, so understandably the band are the focus here.It starts in typical fashion covering his early life and he writes with a very appealing turn of phrase, often quite funny. There is one chapter devoted to telling the story of his parents who went through a harrowing ordeal, it’s necessary for his life story but not an easy read.Once past that it’s music and Rush all the way with the story of the struggle to get the band off the ground, keep it going and then ultimately achieving massive global success. For the geeks among us there is plenty of detail on recording the various albums, playing live and specific shows, life on the road, equipment used etc. He gives us a little bit of insight into his personal life through the years too, just enough to balance the story, which is nice. There are definitely a few things in there which surprised me in different ways, which I won’t spoil by detailing here. Suffice to say it’s a well rounded read with everything you want from a biography/memoir and it’s possibly made me admire him more than I already did.
